One of the reasons why I like playing videogames are the God-like abilities I am bestowed with. There’s a certain feeling of omnipotence when I control a pudgy plumber as he saves a WASPy princess, or resurrecting my World War II soldier unscathed as he continues fighting Nazi forces. In Press Play’s Max and the Magic Marker, however, the only thing my hand wields is a giant orange marker, whose drawings can magically come to life. I also get to control the movements of protagonist Max, but Max isn’t capable of much. So when he struggles to climb over a wall that’s too tall, I must divinely intervene and draw a small step to help poor Max. Instead of feeling omnipotent, I end up feeling a bit paternal. Then again, blame Max, who got me into this mess in the first place. Out of the blue, he received this magic marker in the mail. He soon realized that whatever he drew with this market came into fruition, but instead of drawing bags of money, the cure to rabies, or absolutely anything else that is useful, he drew monsters, which we now must stop. The drawing game mechanic isn’t particularly original (Crayon Physics Deluxe, Kirby Canvas Curse, and Scribblenauts are some leading games loosely based on the same concept of drawing physical objects or paths to move towards a goal), but the pairing with the platform genre and the game’s unique art style make it stand out. While manipulating Max may not be the most exciting thing, there is real genuine fun to be had for kids eight years and older when it comes to messing around with the physics and the world that surrounds him. Drawing stairs is just one of the many ways you’ll need to help Max. The great thing about this game is that you actually have to think. It plays like a standard platform game, but you must draw your way across the world to get Max into the whirlpool exit and through the next level. It’s not as simple as drawing a line between two. A magic marker can be a very deadly tool.In 2010, Max and the Magic Marker was released on WiiWare by Denmark based developer Press Play. The inventive puzzle platformer let players wield a magic marker and draw anywhere on the screen. The game’s sequel, Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, was a Microsoft exclusive for many years until Press Play was shut down in 2016. Press Play’s successor Flashbulb Games and Stage Clear Studios have teamed up to bring the game to the Nintendo Switch. Player’s will at times be confounded by some of the tougher puzzles, but overall Max: The Curse of Brotherhood is a very smart and unique platformer that feels right at home on the Switch. The story is very simple. Max has a younger brother named Felix who is always getting on his nerves. Using a search engine on his computer, Max finds a magic spell that promises to get rid of Felix. Max reads the spell, which opens a portal to another universe from which a claw emerges and grabs Felix. Max quickly realizes he’s made a mistake and jumps into the portal to save his brother. The game features 20 levels spread across 7 chapters. At first, Max must traverse the strange new land using just your standard platformer controls. Max can climb ladders and vines, push stones, and crawl into tight passageways. Things become a lot more interesting when Max finds the first of many upgrades to his magic marker. The first upgrade allows Max to raise platforms out of specially marked areas that glow orange. As you progress through the game and gain additional upgrades, you’ll notice many additional glowing areas, which each have a specific color corresponding to the specific marker power you can use. Additional powers you gain include the ability to draw vines, branches, water streams, and fireballs. When wielding the magic marker, players have the choice between conventional controls or utilizing the Switch touchscreen. At the start of the game, I would usually use touch controls to draw vines and branches, but found that my inputs didn’t always register

Max & the Magic Marker is a physics based 2D puzzle platformer where the player needs to solve puzzles by drawing into the environment, forming physical objects that can be used to overcome puzzles. The game's protagonist is Max, a young boy who receives an envelope with a marker inside. He draws a monster, Mustacho, but suddenly the character comes to life and disappears into Max' drawings. Max chases after him and needs to travel through different worlds to halt the villain.Max is able to run around, jump, push and pull objects, and climb up or slide down. At the same time, the player controls a large marker on the screen. To use it, it needs to be filled with ink, which is collected through bubbles scattered around the level. At certain passages, Mustacho often appears to vacuum all the ink out of the marker. Using the orange marker, the player can draw lines and shapes into the environment to form objects. The possibilities are determined based on the amount of ink available and quick swipes use less ink compared to drawing slowly. Using the marker, the player can draw steps, bridges and platforms to help out Max. More complex shapes are also possible, including shields, objects to drop down on enemies or weights to use for seesaw mechanics, offering different possibilities to solve puzzles. Different objects can exist next to each other and independent lines can be connected to form complex shapes. At any time, the used ink can be reclaimed to start over. When the objects are out of view, the marker can be shaken to retrieve all of it.There are different worlds to explore, each with a unique theme, and every world consists of multiple levels with checkpoints. At any time, the player can swap between Max' imagination and the original drawings. In the original drawing mode, the graphics change and time is halted. The animation. The art style is based on children’s’ drawings, which the creators actually referred to when designing the backdrop and overall look of Max and the Magic Marker. The drawings are cutesy, even nostalgic at times, and the colors are lush. Surprisingly, the main villains of this game are quite unremarkable. They’re just these short nuggety purple blobs that bounce around on the floor. It was almost as if the design team used all their creativity and had none left when it came to creating the direct antagonist of the game. Oh well. There are some other technical oversights I wish were addressed. One thing I found extremely annoying was the narrow zoom of the camera, effectively reducing your line of vision so you can’t tell what’s ahead of you, what you need to do, and most importantly: what you need to draw. The game will just leave Max at the edge of a cliff or an edge of island and you have to purposely take a huge leap towards your death just to see what’s beyond the screen. I played on my 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro and found that switching between navigating Max with the keyboard and drawing with the mouse became tiring very quickly. Although I realize there’s no real other way around it, it still bugged me, and I can see why this game excels better on a Wii system. Furthermore, despite the fact that there are plenty of diverse puzzles for Max to solve in order to get around physical barriers and such, I would say a bulk of the gameplay is spent drawing stairs, lots of them. One can only draw staircases a couple dozen times within the hour before going crazy. You’ll occasionally have your ink drained by a giant eggplant. Macworld’s buying advice Max and the Magic Marker doesn’t have an earth-shattering game concept, but that’s OK, because the game is so well executed. The colorful graphics, the puzzles, and the undeniable cuteness of it all made the game quite charming. Of course, the switching back and forth between the
