RhythmboxThe third entry on this list of best Linux music players is Rhythmbox by the GNOME team, the default Ubuntu music player. Personally, I’m not a big fan of this audio tool due to its lack of customization options. However, you can add functionalities and change new features via plugins. If all you need is a basic music player, you can stick with Rhythmbox. The main window of the Rhythmbox Linux music player is divided into two parts. The songs and playlists are loaded in the main area on the right. Using the import option, you can add files to the playlist. The browse option reveals the artists and album tab under which songs are categorized. It also comes with options to play online radio and podcasts easily. Why stick with Rhythmbox audio player?No-nonsense music playerCan also act as a DAPP serverSupport for pluginsInstalling Rhythmbox in Ubuntu:sudo apt install rhythmbox4. AudaciousAudacious is an open-source media player that’s widely popular among audiophiles. It’s a no-nonsense software that stays low-resource and makes sure that even a PC with older specifications doesn’t feel overwhelmed while playing music. It uses around 20-25MB RAM and supports all popular audio file formats. All the necessary controls in this MP3 player for Linux are stacked at the top that can be used to add music files to the playlist, skip the song, pause it, or shuffle and repeat it. Using the search option, you can load songs in your library and search using song or artist name. In case you love personalizing the looks of Audacious, you can do so with Winamp themes and get more options as well. While it’s not an in-built functionality, using plugins you can fetch lyrics, set an alarm, and a lot more. Why use Audacious music player?Low on resource usageSimple to useSupport for plugins and themesInstalling Audacious on Ubuntu:sudo apt-get install audacious5. QMMPIn case you’re a fan of a small, single-window interface, look no further and install Qmmp. It borrows its looks from the popular Winamp music player. Unlike other Linux music players that take up a big-screen space, Qmmp has all the basic controls and playlists in a small window.Using the menu option at the top left corner, you can access other options like visualization, settings, etc. With its extensive theme support, you can customize Qmmp to a great extent and make it your own. Apart from support for various audio formats and cuesheets, this Linux music player also ships with Volume Normalization as a built-in option. Why use Qmmp for Linux audio playback?Winamp-like small interfaceSimple to use, lightweightExtensive Normal topic VLC Portable 2.x by greg45416 » November 16, 2024 - 3:30pm 2 by greg45416November 16, 2024 - 4:21pm Normal topic AIMP pas vraiment portable by sebasti1 » November 6, 2024 - 5:04am 1 by John T. Last Updated on November 5, 2020I’ve been writing a lot about multimedia software recently. My recent focus has been on YouTube and music players such as Kaku, Strawberry, Headset, and Qmmp. Staying on the multimedia theme, I’m experimenting with the best way of listening to the radio on my Linux boxes. One of my favorite ways is to use the Internet Radio GNOME Extension, which ranked 10th in the 24 Excellent GNOME Extensions feature. But I’m finding so many great applications designed for other desktop environments such that I’m slowly moving away from GNOME.Step forward odio. It’s a cross-platform, no-charge radio streaming software with more than 20,000 radio stations. These radio stations are taken from www.radio-browser.info.Odio runs on any graphical desktop environment. Linux support arrived with version 1.1.0 in November last year.InstallationLet’s get a thorny issue out of the way. While odio can be downloaded without charge, the software is not (currently) released under an open source license. The developer’s GitHub repository intimates odio will shortly be released under an open source license. Let’s hope so!You therefore cannot download the source code and compile it. Instead, what are the installation options? For Linux, the developer offers an AppImage (32- and 64-bit) which makes it easy to run the software. AppImage is a format for distributing portable software on Linux without needing superuser permissions to install the application. All that’s required is to download the AppImage, and make the file executable by typing:$ chmod u+x ./odio-1.4.0-x86_64.AppImageWhen you run odio for the

If you’re addicted to your terminal and keyboard, Cmus is meant for people like you. No matter how big is your music library, Cmus loads with a lighting speed and uses about 20MB RAM.This open source software can also run on older computers whose operating systems don’t have GUI. Its keyboard shortcuts give you tons of power over your music playback and how it’s played. It goes without saying that Cmus plays all major audio formats. You can also use different open source extensions to change color themes, get lyrics, etc.Why use Cmus terminal music player?Great for heavy terminal, keyboard usersFast, powerful, lightweightCustomizable keybindigsInstalling Cmus on Ubuntu:sudo apt-get install cmusMeanwhile, you can also check out our article on the best music player for Windows 10/ 11 PCs here!7. GNOME MusicIf simplicity is what you desire the most in a music player, and if you want to play your favorite tracks with no fancy features, GNOME Music is the way to go.There isn’t much to talk about this music player since all it does is it searches for music in the Music directory and lets you play them. It also comes with a lot of keyboard shortcuts for navigation and playback. You get four tabs on the above – Albums, Artists, Songs, and Playlist, to sort music and play what you like. Why use GNOME Music?Keyboard shortcuts for navigation and playbackSimple designLightweightInstalling GNOME Musicsudo apt-get install gnome-music8. VLCVLC is one of the oldest media players in existence and we all grew up with it. Apart from video files, it can also play audio tracks. The sheer number of customization options, plugins, codecs, and other features make it one of the best media players out there. And let’s not forget the different visualization options, which will give you a satisfying slap of nostalgia. Overall, it’s still one of the best audio and video players out there. Why use VLC?One of the oldest players in existenceGreat customization optionsCan play audio and videoPluginsInstalling VLCsudo apt install vlcEditor’s Recommendation:Like tons of Linux distros for different needs like gaming, older PCs, programming, etc., software for these operating systems also has lots of variety. If you wish to use a feature-rich Linux music player that satisfies your needs, Amarok and Clementine are the best options available.I personally use Amarok as my media player, and I’m hoping that it gets updated soon with some newer features. In case you’re here for a lightweight Linux music player, Audacious and Qmmp are also great choices. Do give these audio players for Linux distributions a try and share your feedback with us.. By TechCrunch that a redesigned Android app was planned alongside the announcement of the development of Winamp 6.[98]An app for the Winamp service was released in beta for Android in July 2023.[110][111]MacintoshIn 1997, Nullsoft also released MacAmp, an Apple Macintosh equivalent of Winamp. In October 2011, Winamp Sync for Mac was introduced as a beta release. It is the first Winamp version for the Mac OS X platform and runs under version 10.6 and above. Its focus is on syncing the Winamp Library to Winamp for Android and the iTunes Music Library (hence the name, "Winamp Sync for Mac"). Nonetheless, a full Winamp Library and player features are included. The developer's blog stated that the Winamp Sync for Mac Beta would pave the way for future Winamp-related development on Mac[112] and a fully featured media player as Winamp on Windows.[113] However no further development occurred.LinuxAn early alpha preview of Winamp3 for desktop Linux was developed in October 2001,[114] but support was dropped not long after. Nonetheless some versions of Winamp for Windows are functional using Wine.MS-DOSDOSamp for MS-DOS operating systems was released in 1997. The software was soon abandoned by Nullsoft to focus on the Windows version (Winamp).iOSIn July 2023, a beta version of a Winamp service was released via TestFlight for the iOS mobile platform.[115][111]Winamp has historically included a number of Easter eggs: hidden features that are accessible via undocumented operations. One example is an image of Justin Frankel, one of Winamp's original authors, hidden in Winamp's About dialog box.[116] The included Easter eggs have changed with versions of Winamp, and over thirty have been documented elsewhere.[117]Unagi is the codename for the media playback engine derived from Winamp core technologies. AOL announced in 2004 that Unagi would be incorporated into AOL Media Player (AMP), in development.[118] After beta testing, AMP was discontinued in 2005, but portions lived on in AOL's Web-based player.[119]XMMS, xmms2, qmmp and Audacious are free and open source music players created as clones of Winamp. Some of these even support skins and plug-ins designed for Winamp.[120]An HTML5 and JavaScript-based web player resembling the graphical user interface of Winamp 2 was developed by programmer Jordan Eldredge in 2018.[121]MacAmpAudaciousXMMSqmmpComparisons of media playersComparison of audio player softwareComparison of feed aggregatorsList of audio conversion software

Why use Qmmp for Linux audio playback?Winamp-like small interfaceSimple to use, lightweightExtensive
