Raw Therapee is an open source image processing tool which provides a huge range of ways to enhance your digital photos and other images. (As the name suggests, it's intended for use with raw files from digital cameras, but the program can also import JPEG, TIFF and PNG files.)The vast array of high-end novices will quickly confuse the image processing novice, but if you know what you're doing then there's a great deal to explore here.RAW image quality may be enhanced by a good range of demosaicing algorithms, for instance: AMaZE, DCB, fast, AHD, EAHD, HPHD & VNG4.Colour handling controls cover everything from simple channel mixing and RGB curves, to white balance, HSV, vibrance and more.Would you like to enhance details? The Detail pane contains no less than seven options: Sharpening, Edges, Microcontrast, Impulse Noise Reduction, Noise Reduction, Defringe and Contrast by detail levels. And each of these is highly configurable, so for example select Sharpening and you can choose the algorithm (Unsharp Mask or RL Deconvolution), radius, amount, threshold and more.And you also get great exposure controls, a stack of powerful lens/ geometry correction tools, EXIF/ IPTC metadata editing, batch processing, command line control, lots of configuration options, and the list goes on.Beginners should look elsewhere, then, but if you're familiar with this kind of high-end image processing tool then you'll get a lot out of Raw Therapee. Set our "colors" sample to "Blacks," then increased black and removed some of the blue haze from the darks in the image. We can also use this same tool to adjust the apparent white balance of the image, removing the yellow cast in the highlights and midtones. Another option is to open the file in Lightroom, RAW Therapee, or Adobe Camera Raw (shown above.) If you have Photoshop, you can open any photo in camera raw by going to File > Open As and opening your scan as a Raw file. This can allow you to set a more accurate white point than the Selective Color tool, and also allows you the wealth of fairly complex tools in Camera Raw (or other comparable programs.) It got very favorable reviews and compares well with its - fairly expensive - commercial counterparts (Adobe C1, Bibble, etc.). Can be found here: just installed it, moved it to another drive and uninstalled it. Still works fine and writes its settings into a local "options" file. Didn't investigate, if it's stealth, but a quick look through the registry didn't show anything RT related. Have used Bibble Pro for some time now, and Raw Therapee's sharpening algorithms appear to be far superior to Bibble's.Although it seems not to write settings to the registry, it saves info to a .RawTherapee directory within a user's Application Data folder.Tried JPE on it, but was unsuccessful.
