There‘s no way we could have manually combed through almost 20 years of raw interview recordings in time for the story. But with Pinpoint‘s transcript search and clipmaking tools, we found pivotal moments in a matter of days and could weave them into a powerful narrative."Another early pioneer of Pinpoint was the fact-checking website PolitiFact. Their reporters used Pinpoint to verify claims made by politicians in speeches, debates, and TV appearances. By quickly searching for keywords and pulling the relevant clips, the PolitiFact team was able to determine if statements were factual or not, and provide full video receipts. Pinpoint became a vital tool for holding politicians accountable and informing voters.Beyond journalism, researchers and academics are finding novel applications for Pinpoint to study media trends and gather empirical insights from audio/video data at scale. For example, Stanford‘s Internet Observatory used Pinpoint to examine how 2020 election misinformation narratives spread through TV and online video content. Google Pinpoint is a cutting-edge artificial intelligence tool that empowers journalists, researchers, and others to rapidly search and analyze large archives of audio and video content. Released in 2019 as part of the Google News Initiative, Pinpoint uses advanced machine learning and speech recognition to automatically transcribe and index the contents of multimedia files, making it dramatically easier to find relevant clips and moments.How Pinpoint Works: Under the HoodAt a high level, Pinpoint solves the fundamental challenge of making unstructured audio and video data more structured and searchable, similar to text documents. While a text-based article or web page can be easily indexed and searched for any keyword, it‘s much harder to find a specific word or phrase within an audio recording or video file. Pinpoint bridges this gap by using AI to convert speech to text, then applying natural language processing (NLP) to analyze and index the transcript.When a user uploads an audio or video file to Pinpoint, the system first applies a series of pre-processing techniques to enhance the audio quality and isolate the speech content. This includes separating music, background noise, and other non-speech sounds using Google‘s AudioSet dataset and models. Next, the cleaned audio is run through Google‘s state-of-the-art speech recognition deep learning models to generate a text transcript. These AI models are trained on thousands of hours of diverse speech data and can accurately transcribe over 125 languages and dialects. Google is constantly iterating on these models to push the boundaries of transcription performance – Pinpoint leverages the same technology that powers Google Assistant, Voice Search, and other marquee speech products.Pinpoint‘s speech-to-text engine can handle extremely challenging audio with ease. It can recognize speech from multiple speakers (even with heavy overlapping), strong accents and background noise, and domain-specific terminology. In a 2022 benchmark test, Pinpoint achieved an average word error rate (WER) of just 4.9% across a variety of media types – meaning just 1 in 20 words are incorrectly transcribed. This accuracy rivals and in some cases exceeds human-level performance.Once a transcript is generated, Pinpoint uses additional machine learning models to derive semantic insights and structure from the raw text. This includes:Speaker diarization (labeling who spoke when)Punctuation and capitalization Entity recognition (identifying mentions of people, places, organizations)Topic classification and keyword extractionSentiment analysisMany of these AI-powered "enrichments" are enabled by Google‘s Knowledge Graph – a massive database of real-world entities and facts. By connecting the contents of audio/video to the Knowledge Graph, Pinpoint can identify that a certain quote was said by a certain person, or that a clip is discussing a certain news event.
