Lives for gear Joined: Dec 2005 🎧 15 years Building a Compressor Arsenal from Scratch... Part Two. Hey all,First I wanted to thank those who helped out with my previous compressor arsenal thread. I took all of the comments to heart, but especially the suggestion that I try to get different "types of compressors" -- ie. a vari-mu, an opto, and a FET, for example. My current plans are much different than they used to be. I'm thinking:1. Thermionic Phoenix2. Tube Tech CL1B3. Portico 5043 *OR* Daking FET II4. Distressor w/Brit ModIf anyone still has the energy to pipe in and let me know if there seems to be any overlap, that would be great. I'm seeing the Tube Tech as working well on vocals (I had originally planned for an LA2A, but I hear the Tube Tech improves on it in a way). The Phoenix could be used on tons of things, but especially drum bus and mix bus. The other two would cover the rest of my bases.Would love to hear further suggestions. By thursday, the orders will be placed. :-) Thanks!! Lives for gear Joined: Sep 2003 🎧 20 years Quote: Originally Posted by Matthew Murray ➡️ My current plans are much different than they used to be. Curious -- which one of those would likely bear the brunt of vocal duties? My list is the result of ages (far too long, actually) of waffling around and hearing different takes on various compressors .. and I think I'm fairly certain I want at least 3 of those 4. What I'm looking for now is advice with regard to whether or not there is too much overlap in any of them. Ie -- is the phoenix a good enough vox compressor that we shouldn't get the tube tech for vocals? Or does the TT still One of the most important and powerful tools in any recording studio arsenal is – without a doubt – the compressor. I recently wrote about studio compressors and which specific units were good for specific applications. However, I’ve been hearing a lot of budding engineers say that they don’t understand what all the different settings do or how they actually affect the source audio. Essentially these folks have been saying that they just fool with all the knobs/settings until they think everything sounds okay. The number one rule for recording and mixing is “as long as it sounds good, it is good.” I completely agree with and abide by this rule. But it couldn’t hurt to at least know what everything does, right? That way one doesn’t have to fiddle around with settings they don’t understand and they can just get right to the proverbial meat and potatoes of it all. So…what the heck are all these settings on my compressor? The BasicsCompressor knobs and settings can range from wonderfully simple to other-worldly complex. Let’s start off by tackling the most common elements that can be found on your go-to plug-in or on your dope new rack piece. For this section, I’m using the basic controls of the Dyn3 Compressor/Limiter from Avid. If Pro Tools isn’t the go-to DAW for your situation, this should still suffice as Logic and Studio One have compressors that are all very similar to this particular plug-in.Input GainEasy enough – this controls the amount of signal that is being sent into the compressorOutput or Make-Up GainThis is the amount of signal that is being sent out of the compressor and back into the channel.ThresholdThis is one of the most important features to understand on a compressor. Settings.Low CPU Usage: Ideal for users working on larger projects or with limited processing power.High-Quality Tube Emulation: Adds a classic analog warmth to any track.Cons:Limited Control: Some users might find the lack of detailed attack, release, and ratio controls limiting, especially for more advanced mixing tasks. No Sidechain Function: Supercharger lacks sidechain input, a feature found on more advanced compressors, limiting its use in certain production techniques like ducking.Comparison to Other CompressorsSupercharger sits comfortably between basic stock compressors and high-end, complex alternatives. Its tube-emulated sound gives it an edge over many other free compressors, especially those with a purely digital sound. However, for more in-depth tweaking, professional compressors like FabFilter Pro-C 2 or Waves SSL G-Master Buss Compressor offer more control. That said, Supercharger is a fantastic option for users who prioritize ease of use and quick results without sacrificing quality.ConclusionNative Instruments’ Supercharger is a must-have plugin for producers looking to add analog warmth and character to their tracks without diving into complicated controls. Whether you’re a beginner looking for a straightforward compressor or a seasoned producer seeking quick and effective sound shaping, Supercharger delivers rich, high-quality tube compression at zero cost during promotions. You can check the Native Instruments website for any ongoing promotions or availability of Supercharger as a free download. It’s an excellent addition to any plugin arsenal, particularly for users who appreciate analog-style compression with a modern, user-friendly interface. Continue Reading. Foremost. And especially as a beginner, you’d be in a much better starting point when you take it slow on the gear-collecting so you can be adept at the tools you already have. Take the time to listen and understand every parameter. Knowing the ins and outs of the tools you have makes your mastering skills more powerful than having a huge arsenal of tools you’re not intimately familiar with. This also results in having more intention when it’s time to expand your toolset.“(Refrain from) acquiring more gear or plug-ins before becoming proficient on what you already have! Understanding how to use what you got (this includes training your ears!) is important in order to learn what additional tools you need.” - Margaret Luthar 4. Jumping straight into mastering without listening intently to the music“In my opinion, the common mistake beginners make when mastering is immediately processing and tweaking knobs before fully understanding the mix. Appreciation of the mix is key to gaining a better perspective of the song you’re mastering. For me, feeling the vibe—the tonal and dynamic characteristics of the song that the artist, producer and mix engineer tried to achieve—is the most important information. Once you’ve achieved that, the mastering process becomes easier and much more efficient.” - Ahmet Gökhan CoşkunMastery of your tools is just one step towards becoming a better mastering engineer. The more important step is learning how to apply this knowledge to the unique needs of the music you’re mastering. A common beginner mistake is reaching for the knobs and immediately applying a common processing technique—like a high-pass EQ or inserting your favorite mastering compressor—without putting much thought into the “why”. What works for one song won’t necessarily work for another, so intention is key. With the resampling frequency that removes all harmonic content above it, ensuring no aliasing will appear below this frequency in the spectrum. A further post filter (Image filter), also synchronized with the resampler, gives control over amount of aliasing images appearing above resampling frequency when enabled. Adjustable Jitter - An unprecedented feature in the bit crusher’s world which introduces short-period, random fluctuations to the resampling frequency, thus making the process even more sonically interesting by producing a type of harmonic distortion you’ve likely never heard in this context. Two quantization methods - Two available quantization methods; the mid-raiser and mid-tread decimation algorithms, each of them characterized by a drastically different dynamics response. Controllable dithering - Dithering was conceptually developed as means to reduce audible quantization errors by masking the harmonic distortions they cause. We added controllable dithering to increase number of ways in which you can (mal)treat the sound. All this adds up to a very powerful and musical tool which is not only another creativity-releasing item for your arsenal, but one that gives you the ability to emulate classic sampling units in-the-box—now with even greater precision through access to a variety of parameters unavailable up till now in effects of this type!Learn more about Decimort 2.Vintage Tube Distortion effectPrecisely modeled tube distortion module capturing the sensitivity, warmth, and character of real tube saturation and analog circuits.
