I'll have to search out the longer thread about this, but after quite a bit of debate and min-max testing, it was determined that in Awakening, strength slightly outdoes cunning while offering other bonuses (i.e. better armor). This is true for both bow and dagger rogues. It's really not a significant difference, though. In vanilla DA:O, you'll see slightly better damage output with cunning, but lose a good bit of survivability.If you have gone with a cunning-based build, you lose quite a bit going with the tier 3 WC armor. Armor rating is about the same for both (9+4 for felon, 12.25+1 for WC), but Felon has +1.5 extra stamina regen, +5 physical resistance, +15 defense (+9 defense + 6 more from dexterity), +6 damage stat, and perhaps most importantly, it makes you unable to use a bow effectively (and if you don't have a ranged weapon on every character, you're in need of a sanity check). Now, you get the +15% crit/backstab, which is great if you're backstabbing but not so hot otherwise. You can have 13 base strength after the fade, then +2 honnleath, +3 vanguard, +2 key, +2 HF/RoW, +2 andruil. That's +11, meaning you lose 2 more stat points adding strength that you won't be using for any other purpose. Now you've lost 8 damage stat points, 2 of which can be put into cunning for more damage.In the long run, you'll do slightly more damage with the Warden Commander plate while backstabbing, but lose out on all the aforementioned bonuses and be less effective when not backstabbing. That's a lot to swallow if you ask me. I'm also inclined to throw that whole set on another character -- gave a tier 7 set to Wynne in my second playthrough, for example.
