In the fast-paced world of messaging apps, Beeper Mini’s recent journey has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. It’s been a whirlwind from skyrocketing to the top of the Play Store charts to facing unexpected challenges. In short, Beeper Mini was shut down by Apple as soon as it posed a threat to the iPhone maker’s iMessaging app. This did not stop teh developers form deploying a workaround. Today’s Beeper Mini update promises to chat with Apple iMessage from Android devices, and it’s free! After a hiccup, Beeper Mini is back. What is Beepr Mini?Remember the green bubble blues? Those pesky Android texts that felt like a digital cold shoulder compared to the sleek, blue iMessages of your iPhone friends? Well, Beeper Mini promises to transform those green bubbles into the coveted blue with a simple app.Beeper Mini was an Android app launched in November 2023 with a singular purpose: bridge the messaging gap between iPhones and Androids. It did this by leveraging a loophole in Apple’s Push Notification Service (APNS), allowing Android users to register their phone numbers with iMessage and receive blue bubble messages directly. For some Android users, especially those in the United States, this means a low. No more feeling like an outsider in iMessage group chats, no more missing out on those fun reactions and effects. Beeper Mini promises seamless communication, regardless of your phone’s operating system. However, within a week of its launch, Apple patched the APNS loophole, rendering Beeper Mini unusable.Beeper Mini’s story is not over just yet. What’s new with Beeper Mini’s latest update?Beeper Mini, an instant hit upon its launch, encountered a hiccup when users reported difficulties in sending or receiving messages. The Beeper team quickly leaped into action, identifying and fixing the issue within 24 hours for Beeper Cloud users. The update is now live on Google Play, ensuring a seamless messaging experience. But that’s not all – alongside bug fixes, the team rolled out a set of new features. Chats now open at the last unread message, and the video player received a polished makeover.Changes in User Registration and PricingOne notable change involves user registration. Phone number registration is temporarily on hold, requiring all users to sign in with an Apple ID. Messages will now be sent and received via email addresses instead of phone numbers. The Beeper team is actively working on resolving this, emphasizing the commitment to user convenience and security. In a surprising move, Beeper is now free to use. Acknowledging the recent challenges, the team decided to make the app free temporarily. They assure users that, once stability returns, they will reconsider turning on subscriptions. It’s a gesture of gratitude towards the community that has supported them through thick and thin.Apple’s Response: Privacy, Security, and ControversyThe plot thickens with Apple’s response. According to a statement received by The Verge, Apple emphasized its commitment to user privacy and security. However, Beeper Mini’s team disputes this, asserting that their app actually enhances security for both Android and iPhone users. The controversy stems from Apple’s

ICQ will cease operations June 26. If you know, you know. ICQ in Windows 98. Credit: Samuel Axon ICQ in Windows 98. Credit: Samuel Axon After nearly 28 years in operation, messaging service ICQ will cease operations on June 26, according to its current owners. You'd be forgiven for not realizing it still existed; the proto-IM service hasn't been in the mainstream since the 2000s. But in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it simultaneously laid the groundwork for direct messaging and social networking as we came to know it in the post-Facebook era.28 years of historyICQ was something of an accident, as popular as it became. Created by four Israeli computer geeks, it wasn't even meant to be the original idea.In the wake of the Netscape IPO, which heralded a new era of tech-based money-making ventures, the four of them were looking for an idea to run with. Their initial plan was to launch a service that would make checking beeper messages easier. They invented ICQ as a tool for themselves while working on that project. In the time of dial-up, staying online all the time to receive messages or chat on platforms like IRC wasn't a thing for everybody. Most folks had to keep those lines open for phone calls. As a result, the creators of ICQ were getting frustrated that they weren't seeing each other's online messages. They developed ICQ as a better way to communicate from their homes while collaborating on the (now pointless) beeper project. The application didn't have much marketing behind it, but it spread quickly by word of mouth—particularly in nascent online gaming communities around multi-user dungeons (MUDs), early deathmatches, and so on. More than anything else, the bearer of ICQ's legacy today is Discord. ICQ was eventually purchased by AOL, and it lost ground to more heavily financially backed services like AIM and MSN. Then came MySpace, Facebook, social media, iMessage, and so on, leaving no more room for old ICQ.In 2010, ICQ was acquired by a company that was then called Mail.ru, a major Russian Internet applications provider. That company eventually morphed and changed its name to VK, and it has been keeping ICQ on life support as a sort of Russian Skype alternative since then.Messaging memoriesIn light of the news, a few Ars staffers have shared some of their memories of ICQ.Samuel Axon - Senior EditorICQ had several unique features for the time. These push notifications do not contain the contents of messages.Next, you are prompted to grant contact list and SMS permission access.Contact list access is used to match phone numbers to contact names, and display profile pictures. Your contact list is never sent to Beeper servers.SMS access is used to send an SMS text message from your number to Apple’s “Gateway” service. The gateway sends a response via SMS, and the contents from that SMS response are sent to Apple to register your phone number as a blue bubble. Your SMS chat history is also used to determine if any of your recent SMS chats were with people who have iPhones. If so, these chats are shown in the inbox. It’s at this point that the app generates encryption keys that are used for end-to-end encrypted messaging. Beeper: Unified messaging for 14 networks
Familiar as the service that allows them to send push notifications to their iOS applications. For iMessage protocol, all messaging traffic flows over this service in both directions, encrypted with keys generated locally on each device. Beeper Mini connects to APNs over TCP, using the credentials generated during the login process.A persistent connection to APNs is needed to be notified of new incoming messages in real-time. On an iPhone, an APNs connection is maintained by the operating system, and connected at all times. In Beeper Mini, the connection can only be maintained when the app is running, since Android does not support APNs natively. To work around this limitation, we built Beeper Push Notification service (BPNs). BPNs connects to Apple’s servers on your behalf when Beeper Mini Android app isn’t running. We can do this while preserving user privacy thanks to Apple separating the credentials needed to connect to APNs to send and receive content (the “push” credentials) and the keys needed to encrypt and decrypt messages (the “identity” keys). Push credentials can be shared securely with the Beeper Push Notification service, and BPNs can connect to APNs on your behalf. Whenever BPNs receives an encrypted message that it won’t be able to decrypt, it simply disconnects from APNs and sends an FCM push notification to wake up the Android app, which then connects to APNs, downloads, decrypts and processes the incoming message. BPNs can only tell when a new message is waiting for you – it does not have credentials to see or do anything else.BPNs will be notified when you receive a message, but without the encryption keys it can’t decrypt anything BPNs receives. Also, without the identity credentials, BPNs can’t send messages on your behalf.
