Figure 3a – A stack configuration supporting Bluetooth LE with GAP/GATT/ATTBluetooth® enabled devices are capable of achieving highly reliable communication in even the most challenging circumstances. At every layer, Bluetooth technology was designed with reliability in mind and has adopted a number of techniques to lower the probability of suffering from interference.Recently, Martin Woolley, developer relations manager with the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), released a paper on Understanding Reliability in Bluetooth Technology. In this deep dive into Bluetooth reliability, Woolley explains how Bluetooth technology can build reliable connections despite the inherent unreliable nature of radio.Below is an excerpt from that section of Woolley’s paper.Creating Reliability From Unreliable FoundationsBluetooth® technology uses radio, and radio is unreliable. But Bluetooth communication works very well, so how is this apparent contradiction to be explained? The answer lies in numerous aspects of the design of the Bluetooth communication system, including its use of radio and its protocols.Bluetooth technology is a modular system and more than one configuration of stack is possible.Figure 3b – A stack configuration supporting Bluetooth meshSmartphones and connectable peripheral devices will include a Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) controller with a host component that supports the Generic Access Profile (GAP) and Generic Attribute Profile (GATT) and protocols such as the Attribute Protocol (ATT) and Security Manager Protocol (SMP). Figure 3a shows this stack configuration.A Bluetooth mesh device will also contain a Bluetooth LE controller, but the host part will contain the layers of the Bluetooth mesh networking stack. Figure 3b depicts a Bluetooth mesh stack.Whatever the stack configuration, each layer has clearly defined responsibilities and a means of passing data to the adjacent layers above and below. Features of Bluetooth technology which mitigate or reduce the probability of certain types of potential reliability problems exist in various parts of the stack. Some such mechanisms apply to all possible uses of Bluetooth technology, while some of them apply to only particular scenarios.Generally Applicable Features and Mitigation TechniquesWe’ll start with a guided tour of the reliability enhancing features of Bluetooth® technology that are generally applicable in all scenarios. Title description ms.date Bluetooth Host Radio Support Provides a list of questions and answers about Bluetooth host radio support in Windows 03/05/2025 This article provides answers to typical questions about Bluetooth Radio support.Bluetooth host controllers supported in WindowsWith Windows, a Bluetooth radio can be packaged as an external dongle or embedded inside a computer but it must be connected to one of the computer's USB ports. For more information, see the Bluetooth Devices Reference.Forcing the Bluetooth stack to load if Windows can't match the device ID (Windows Vista)A new Bluetooth radio might not match any of the device IDs in the Bluetooth INF (Bth.inf) that is included with Windows. A missing match prevents Windows from loading a Bluetooth stack for the device. Ensure that your radio works with the native Bluetooth stack in one of the following ways:Create an INF for the radio that references Bth.inf. For an example of a vendor-specific INF file for a Bluetooth radio, see Appendix B: An Example of a Vendor-Provided INF File for Use in Windows Vista.Store an extended compatible ID OS descriptor in the device firmware that specifies an appropriate compatible and subcompatible ID. For information about extended compatible ID OS descriptors, see Microsoft OS Descriptors.Force the Bluetooth stack to loadThe following procedure uses Device Manager to force the Bluetooth stack to load for a new radio:Run the Control Panel Device Manager application and identify the Bluetooth radio on the list of devices. To run the Update Driver Software Wizard, right-click the Bluetooth radio item and select Update Driver Software.Use the wizard to force the Bluetooth stack to install. For a detailed description of this procedure, see Appendix A: How to Install an In-Box Bluetooth Driver on New Hardware in Windows Vista.Ensure in-box support for Bluetooth radiosIHVs should take the following steps to ensure that their Bluetooth radios have in box support on Windows:Ensure that the radio supports the extended compatible ID OS feature descriptor. For details, see Microsoft OS Descriptors.Obtain Windows Certification Program approval for the Bluetooth radio hardware and the associated INF file. For an example of a vendor-specific INF file for a Bluetooth radio, see Appendix B: An Example of a Vendor-Provided INF File for Use in Windows Vista.Use the Partner Center to make the INF file available through Windows UpdateIt's no longer possible to add radios to the in-box Bth.inf file.INF files using the Microsoft-defined class GUIDUse the Microsoft-defined class globally unique identifier (GUID) ({e0cbf06c cd8b 4647 bb8a 263b43f0f974}) for Bluetooth devices only in those INF files that reference the in-box Bluetooth INF file (Bth.inf). The device uses the native Windows installer, services, and notification area icon. If you implement your own Bluetooth stack, you must create a vendor-specific class GUID
