On September 27, 2024, at 3 p.m., the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Alcohol Enforcement Unit conducted a series of alcohol compliance checks in St. Mary’s County. These undercover checks involved a 19-year-old Confidential Informant (CI) from the Sheriff’s Office, dressed in athletic-style pants and shirt, who attempted to purchase alcohol to test each business’s compliance with underage sales laws. The CI was accompanied by Corporal Kristie Nelson from the Special Operations Division, who was also in civilian attire. Twelve businesses were checked, and all complied with Maryland law by verifying the CI’s age and refusing to sell alcohol to an underage individual. If you’re looking for places that serve up a taste of tradition with a helping of charm, you’re in the right place. These are my four favorite country stores in Maryland:Woolford Store—Woolford, MDIf you ever find yourself in Dorchester County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore (and you should!), make your way to the landmark Woolford Store near Cambridge for lunch. Put on a special list called the National Register of Historic Places. Some of these buildings include Bachelor's Hope, Deep Falls, and Christ Episcopal Church. Bachelor's Hope, is a historic residence renowned for its unique architectural features. The central two-story brick block, crowned with a jerkinhead roof, boasts a spacious ground-floor room, flanked by one-story, two-room brick wings on either side. This distinctive layout, known as the "Great Hall" plan, along with its façade and component features, sets Bachelor's Hope apart as a one-of-a-kind structure from the 18th century in the state. Deep Falls is another old house in Chaptico, It has a rich history dating back to its beginnings as a one-story, four-room frame house reportedly constructed in 1745. Over the years, the house underwent extensive remodeling, notably during the late 18th century and again in the mid-19th century. Remarkably, Deep Falls has remained in the ownership of the Thomas family throughout its existence, descendants of notable figures such as Governor James Thomas of Maryland and the renowned Civil War spy Richard Thomas, also known as Zarvona. Today, the property continues to be owned by the Thomas family, preserving its legacy for future generations. Christ Episcopal Church, located in Chaptico, is a historic church where people gather to pray and come together as a community. Established in the 1800s, it has served as a significant place for worship and fellowship for many years. Today, it remains an important cornerstone of the community, continuing to provide spiritual guidance and a sense of belonging to its members.These buildings are very special because they help us remember what life was like a long time ago in Chaptico. The mazes generally run from June through October depending upon weather and field conditions. Each year the mazes have a theme. The last theme was a tribute to Bob Ross the famous painter who taught PBS viewers how to create their own masterpiece.Christ Episcopal ChurchA postcard picture perfect historical church. Several members of the Francis Scot Key family were buried in the church cemetery at the Key Family Vault. During the War of 1812 the church was destroyed by invading British, but it has since been brought back to historic beauty. You can read about the invasion at the wayside marker. Today the church hosts special events in addition to normal services.Bowles FarmBowles Farm is a fun place to be in the fall. Take a trip through the giant corn maze, the largest in the area. You can also pick the perfect pumpkin or take a wagon ride on what looks like an old train. You can also have fun petting some friendly animals or visiting the playground.
