Back in 2009, it was estimated that about 9 to 15 million computers around the world were infected with Conficker, a computer worm that can infect a machine and automatically spread itself to other computers on the network, with no interaction from the user. The first version of the Conficker worm was detected in the wild back in 2008. The worm has been making the rounds online since then; Microsoft reported in mid-2011 that some 1.7 million machines were infected with the worm. To address the Conficker worm threat, Enigma Software Group released the free Conficker Removal Tool. It is a software application that will scan your Windows operating system, detect the Conficker worm, and remove it. If your system is not infected with the worm, the Conficker Removal Tool will tell you that it did not find the Conficker worm on your system. To start using the Conficker Removal Tool you need only to download it off the web and onto your computer; you do not need to install it. The download will complete in a blink as it is a lightweight 491KB. All you have to do next is run the executable you downloaded. You will be presented with the Conficker Removal Tool’s interface and you will have to press Start. A wizard will then guide you through the removal process of the Conficker worm. Do not forget that a reboot is required for every step of the process. If the Conficker Removal Tool does not detect the Conficker worm on your system, it will present a “Conficker Not Found” prompt. You can go ahead and exit the application. Please note that when you exit, your default browser will launch and you will be directed to a survey page on the Enigma Software Group website. You will be asked to recount your experience with the free Conficker Removal Tool – if you want to of course. It must be mentioned here that Microsoft released a patch for the Conficker worm and that antivirus solutions detect the worm as well. So if you have a patched and up-to-date system

This works best if you can isolate infected machines (You can watch Wireshark for long queries to junk domain names) to see if they’re infected, at worst case.Generally the ‘patient zero’ in a conficker infection is an older unpatched machine. We had one that was forgotten in a closet, and it unleashed all sorts of hell on our Windows 2003 servers. Using the above method I was able to isolate the machines, and destroy Conficker without requiring a nuke of any machines. Macworld.com – If you’ve been paying attention to general computer news, you may have read about the Conficker worm, and what may (or may not) happen to Windows PCs that are infected with Conficker on April 1. The worm has received a lot of attention, leading more than a few Mac users to ask about the worm’s impact on OS X. Mac security maker Intego received so many inquiries that the company added a Conficker entry to its blog. So, as a Mac user, how worried should you be about Conficker? The short answer to the question is that, unless you’re running Windows inside a virtual machine or via Boot Camp, you really don’t have much to fear from Conficker. It’s a worm that takes advantage of Windows systems with unapplied security patches–a population that may be as high as 30 percent of the Windows machines out there. Conficker won’t work on OS X at all, so most Mac users have nothing to fear from the worm. If you do use Boot Camp and/or Windows inside a virtual machine, however, you should make sure your system has the latest Microsoft patches, and may want to use a third-party anti-virus utility to check to see if your installation has been infected by Conficker. Microsoft also offers a free Conficker removal tool. What exactly does Conficker do? At the moment, nobody really seems to know. Symantec’s security researchers, for instance, theorize that the network of Conficker-infected machines will be “rented out to criminals who want to send spam, steal IDs and direct users to online scams and phishing sites.” The reality is that, because Conficker isn’t active at the moment, nobody knows how it may be used. What is known, however, is that on April 1, certain variants of Conficker will take some active steps to further protect themselves from detection and removal. Infected machines are effectively under control of those who wrote Conficker, and they can install malicious code at their discretion. If you’re using Windows–either on your Mac or directly on an Windows PC–I strongly recommend you take the necessary steps to make sure you haven’t been infected. Like passwords, from infected computers. Ferguson said he believes Eastern Europeans are behind the Waledac worm. He suspects they created the Storm botnet to try different payloads and business models and that Waledac resulted from that. Ferguson speculates that they may be putting their lessons learned from earlier efforts into practice with Conficker. "There is empirical evidence that these guys are a for-hire, for-profit criminal operation on the Internet and that Conficker is nothing more than part of that organization's best efforts to monetize their efforts on the Internet," Ferguson said. Vincent Weafer, vice president of Symantec Security Response, confirmed the Waledac connection with Conficker, but wouldn't speculate on who exactly might be spreading the worms. The fact that Conficker now downloads a Waledac file "reconfirms our belief that ultimately this is a large botnet designed to make money," he said. "It's the first example of how these guys are trying to leverage this botnet for profit."As for the May 3 expiration date in the latest Conficker code, Weafer said it appears to be trying to shut down code related to the first variant of Conficker, Conficker.A, which generated more noise on the Internet than later versions did.Symantec researchers are calling the latest Conficker code that is circulating a new variant of the worm and have dubbed it Downadup.E, with Downadup being another name for Conficker. The worm spreads via a hole in Windows that Microsoft patched in October, as well as through removable storage devices and network shares with weak passwords. The worm disables security software and blocks access to security Web sites. To check if your computer is infected you can use this Conficker Eye Chart or this site at the University of Bonn. There is also a Conficker removal guide on CNET's Download.com site. People are being urged to be careful in their quest for Conficker removal tools. Easily lead to a denial of service against them. Various organizations have made efforts to attempt to preregister these 2 x 250 dailydomains in order to hinder Conficker from retrieving updates and to track infected hosts. Conficker.C tries to evade this defensive approach by creating 50.000 domains per day, making preregistration logistically challenging. Conficker.C randomly chooses 500 out of these domains, which are then contacted for updates.connections attempts. After an unsuccessful update attempt, Conficker.C sleeps for 24 hours. In the case of a successful update, Confickerwaits 4 days before continuing to attempt to download new updates. Since the next domain to be contacted is chosen randomly, the load is equally distributed over many name servers but leads to the problem that thereis no guaranteed set of domains that is contacted on a given day by every host, significantly increasing the effort involved in mitigation at the sinkhole or DNS registrar level.Conficker employs HTTP requests for updates, which hide update requests amongst the regular web traffic patterns found in most networks. To be even more stealthy, Conficker preresolves the domain names and uses only plain IP addresses in the HTTP Host header. Thus, the use of application level gateways and hostbasedfiltering of this traffic is not easily possible.Conficker variants .B and .C contain blacklists of IP address ranges to prevent them from attacking and contacting hosts related to antivirus vendors (AV), some security companies, and Microsoft! The introduction of blacklists in.B can therefore be seen as an improvement for avoiding detection from AVs and Microsoft, and evidence of the worm's author's continuing response to developments in the whitehat community. As the corporate systems typically owned by this type of organization are more likely to be fully patched against the MS08067exploit, this behavior may also increase spreading performance by avoiding low return netblocks.Who is at risk?: Users whose computers are not configured to receive patches and updates from Microsoft and who are not running an up to date antivirus product are most at risk. Users who do not have a genuine version of Windows from Microsoft are most at risk since pirated system usually cannot get Microsoft updates and patches. Question: Am I safe if I don't go to questionable web sites? Answer: No. The Conficker worm seeks out computers on the same network. You can be in a coffee shop, an airport or in the office and the worm will quietly try to attach to your computer and run itself. Conficker removal: Not the easiest thing to do.... Conficker versions have introduced more and more security checks to avoid removal. Beyond blocking access to anti-virus web sites, one is the detection of removal tools. First time Conficker occured in October of 2008 and attacked more then 10 millions PCs all over the world. The other name of Conficker is Kido, Downup and Downadup. The main target of Confliker is Microsoft Windows system operating system. Since SQL Slammer in 2003 Kido is supposed to be one of the most widespread infection. Downup treats a vulnerable place of operating system - its network stack.Conflicker agitated network death in many business and state organizations. British Hotreat of Commons has been attacked with Conflicker a little while since, as British newspaper reports. The unified armed forces of the Federal Republic of Germany reported about Conflicker infection in their network on 2 February of 2009. Various Royal Navy warships and Royal Navy submarines, and hospitals across the city of Sheffield turned to be down under Conficker's attack. The French Navy was attacked on the 15th of January, 2009 and was hardly recovered after several aircrafts were forced to land on several airbases in France. Conficker-B Removal is the only possible measure if you suspect Conficker infection of your PC.The UK Ministry of Defence reported about the infection in their administative networks. MS08-067 vulnerability in Server service is the main target of Conflicker A and, unfortunately, there is no simple way to escape this type of Confliker. Conflicker A appeared on November,21, 2009 and there is no treatment against Downadup A since then. Imagine yourself, if such big and complex networks as British, French and other armed forces couldn't resist against Conflicker attack how can your little defenseless computer resist against such danger?Like hepatite or bird flu, Conficker has several subtypes. All web sites connected with anti malware find themselves blocked or inaccessible.Disabling certain Windows system services such as Automatic Updates, system Defender and others must make you become alerted.Comments
