[HowTo] Use disconnect search as the default search engine
Lem729 last edited by @stahn, @vyedmic, @gero2000The reason Opera limited the default search engines to five was because malware and adware were hijacking people's searches to unsafe sites. Now you can add your engine, but just need to go to the website, right click on the search bar, add the engine to opera, pay attention to the letter(s) that will be associated with a search (change it/them if you're not satisfied) and before a search, use the [letter(s)][space][search query]. With DuckDuckGo, it might just be: "d[space][search query]." All you'd have to remember extra from a normal search DuckDuckGo search is "d [space]." That's not too hard. Now gero2000, you have told us that your version of Firefox was infected with 'speedial.com' malware. That's awful. And it is exactly the kind of concern that drove Opera to limit the default search engines to 5.If you want to avoid having to type the letter, (or the privacy danger that your search is traceable to you), the Disconnect Search extension is an option. Here's a 4 star review of it in PCMag. Disconnect you can do a Search using any of their Search Engines, including DuckDuckGo without the letter(s) and [space]. Now gero2000, you're saying Disconnect largely duplicates the same functionality of searches as Google. The big difference (in addition to the use of two different search engines from what Opera uses as defaults) is that searches are not traceable to you, because they are generally routed through the Disconnect website. Now Disconnect has responded to email every time I've written, so you might try again. Not sure why you didn't get a response. Disconnect doesn't demand money. If you want to contribute, you can. But no way do you have to, or are your pressured to.On the Disconnect Search itself (using the extension in Opera), the results should be very similar to what you get if you don't go through the extension at all. However, some results may be different, example, if you search for a local restaurant or store, the search engine won't know your location so it won't be able to geographically target the results. Sponsored links (otherwise known as advertisements) might also be different, since the search engine will not be able to target them based on your past browsing behavior or other information they know about you. At the moment, they're working on a problem with DuckDuckGo, because the

We all use a search engine at least once a day, however, many people resent having to surrender their privacy in exchange for information. Is it possible to circumvent this trade-off and use alternative search engines to Google? Of course. Here’s how.We all use a search engine at least once a day: whether it is to get more information about a restaurant, find a service we need, or simply satisfy a curiosity we cannot get out of our heads. The business model of the most popular search engines like Google is to offer an apparently free service, and then collect data on users and sell it to companies. However, there are search engines that follow a different model. Here are the best five. The best alternative search engines to Google that do not track your data1. DuckDuckGo2. Swisscows3. Searx.me4. Disconnect Search5. MetaGerOnline privacy, why it is always better to use a VPNThe best alternative search engines to Google that do not track your data1. DuckDuckGoDuckDuckGo is certainly the most popular service among privacy-focused search engines. Unlike Google, however, it is a meta-engine, i.e. a tool that collects its search results from other sources. It is estimated that around 14 million users a day use it.Unlike other ‘private’ search engines, DuckDuck Go has the possibility of saving your search histories, but making sure that they cannot be traced back to you. To meet its expenses and still make a profit, DuckDuck Go uses non targeted advertisements and affiliate marketing.2. Swisscows“We do not collect any personal information from our visitors. Absolutely nothing.”You will find this sentence on the Swisscows homepage, and you can bet on its veracity. This search engine stores neither IP addresses nor any other information. Including, however, your history. The only data collected by Swisscows is the total number of searches you perform each day.Swisscows does not rely on any third-party infrastructure, and uses proprietary servers located right in Switzerland – where strict privacy and data storage rules apply. Unlike all other engines, this one has no servers in Europe or the United States, making it unassailable.3. Searx.meJust like DuckDuckGo, Searx.me is a meta-search engine – and thus aggregates search results from Google, Yahoo and Bing. However, unlike the latter, Searx does not collect data on you and your searches.Searx also does not exploit advertisements, offering one of the best surfing experiences to date.4. Disconnect SearchDisconnect Search is a NoProfit: it does not generate any revenue from its search engine – at least for now. Precisely because of this economic independence, Disconnect does not need to collect any data from you.It is also a meta-engine, and thus collects results from other search engines, but does not track and trace them back to you, nor does it save any data sent from your devices.5. MetaGerMetaGer works slightly differently from the browsers we have seen so far: instead of anonymising searches, it includes an ‘open anonymously’ option for pages, so that the target website has no way of tracking your actions.Online privacy, why itDisconnect Search: Privacy-Focused Web Search Engine

Another browser extension used to stop trackers in their tracks. It’s available for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera.Android apps can be downloaded from both Google Play and the Amazon app store, which makes it easier to install on Android than Disconnect and a viable solution for Kindle Fire users. iOS and Firefox for Android versions are available as well.See also: 6 free anti-tracking browser extensionsAd blockersWe recommend using Disconnect or Ghostery in combination with a more traditional ad blocker like Ad Block Plus or Privacy Badger. These browser extensions block spying advertisements that may not get caught by the above two apps.Turn off interest-based ads in GoogleIf you have an account with Google, be it Gmail or Drive or just a signed-in Android phone, Google will serve you interest-based ads by default. Using the information from your search queries, tracking cookies, and other sources, it can target parents and their children with tailored advertisements. Google operates the world’s largest online advertising network, and ads from companies on that network appear pretty much everywhere, both on and off websites owned by it.Turning off interest-based ads will not stop Google from collecting data on you or your children–the only way to do that is to stop using Google services altogether–but it will make advertisements less targeted. You won’t see advertisements related to products you recently purchased or websites you’ve just visited. Instead, advertisements will be based on less personal details like your location, language, and type of device.Navigate to myaccount.google.com and click “Sign-in and Security”. Here you’ll find several settings related to privacy and security. You can find out more about some of the major ones in this article. For now, scroll down and click on the section that says “Manage ad settings.” Here you can toggle off interest-based ads that appear on pages owned by Google. Now for the tricky part. We still need to switch off these ads on pages not owned by Google, which is the greater concern. On the current page, scroll down a bit further and click the button that reads “Control signed-out ads.” This will load an almost identical page, where you can again toggle the switch to opt out.Alternative searchGoogle controls most of the world’s search market, and one of the most powerful ways it can target everyone with ads, including kids, is by analyzing what they search for. The only way to stop it from snooping on what you search for is to stop using Google altogether.DuckDuckGo is a popular search engine among privacy advocates because it doesn’t use tracking cookies, log IP addresses, or monitor the links you click on in search results. However, thanks to sheer mass, Google has the advantage of. 15.
