Doge Weather, A Weather Site Starring the Doge Meme
Wow, what a night. Now you’re just waking up, gathering your thoughts, planning your day. The window, closed from last night, gives no indication about the world outside. Is it even still there? Such a question must be answered, so, bleary eyed, you reach for your computer, because really, how else are you going to know what’s going on outside? Actually going outside? Please. Weather knowledge is necessary to plan your day, but weather.com is so stodgy and the font on your phone is too small. Maybe you have an app on your computer that tells you, but again, that’s no fun. So, unhappy with the typical weather choices, you want something new, something that speaks to your particular brand of nonsensical humor. Doge. You need Doge to tell you the weather. And now it can. Dogeweather.com uses the iconic Doge meme, complete with floating, colorful text in Comic Sans, to inform you what the weather is in your area. Much like other things involving Doge (see: Dogecoin), Doge Weather has taken off in popularity — even the International Business Times wrote about the website. And of course it’s on reddit. Winter. It’s winter outside. But how wintry is it? Thanks to Doge Weather, I know that it’s 14 degrees in the District of Columbia. It’s also “wow overcast clouds” and “such boring” out. Doge Weather contains the face of Doge, a Shiba Inu, and changes depending on the weather. Since it is “wow overcast clouds” in the District, the dog’s face appears as a cloud in the middle of the page. If it were raining outside, the dog would be wearing a raincoat, or have an umbrella over its head. The website was inspired by Drake Weather, which, as you can imagine, combines an image of singer Drake and the weather report. The website’s creators, web designers Katia Eirin and Bennett Wong, request Dogecoins as tips to keep the website running. Asked why they decided to create Doge Weather, Wong responded, “Why not?” Doge Weather (or dogeweather.com) is a weather forecasting mobile app, web application, and website incorporating the Internet meme Doge. 2025-04-16The White House is preparing to cancel the leases for important weather forecasting offices, including the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, Maryland, according to new reports from the Verge and Axios, citing officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. And it’s just the latest bad news for Americans who like accurate weather forecasts and not dying from severe storms. The building lease on the chopping block includes the National Weather Service’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction, which produces forecasts for the Air Force, the Navy, and the FAA, according to the Verge. Those are, of course, the kind of organizations that rely on accurate weather forecasting to perform. Cuts at the FAA have already raised growing concerns about an increase in aviation accidents. And more slash-and-burn tactics by DOGE aren’t going to make anyone safer. There’s some confusion about whether the NOAA leases have actually been cut yet or whether it’s just in the pipeline. But that kind of confusion is fairly typical of what’s happened over the past month as Elon Musk’s DOGE has taken a chainsaw to the U.S. federal government. Contracts have been cancelled, and thousands of workers have lost their jobs as President Donald Trump has tasked Musk with cutting $2 trillion from the federal budget. Trump and Musk insist DOGE is just cutting “waste, fraud, and abuse,” but the oligarchs have yet to present any evidence of fraud in what they’ve announced. In reality, Musk appears to be making a unilateral decision over what should be funded, a completely illegal move that circumvents Congress, which has the actual power to spend money on behalf of the government. About 10% of NOAA employees have already been laid off, according to the Verge, and reports indicate DOGE is trying to eliminate 50% of the agency. That’s obviously a terrible idea if you want to have accurate weather forecasts, but it’s become increasingly clear that Musk doesn’t care what kind of damage he does to Americans and our quality of life. An anonymous NOAA employee who spoke with Axios described the cuts as a “nightmare scenario” with another worker telling the Verge that “you may not know all the work that goes on behind the scenes, but if these cuts continue, you will feel them personally at some point when that work is gone.” Another building that could get its lease canceled is the Radar Operations Center in Norman, Oklahoma, which is run by NOAA but partners with the Department of Transportation and the Department of Defense to maintain weather radars. But it’s not like the FAA or Army need radar, right?

2025-04-09Administration officials have said the cuts are aimed at eliminating waste, fraud and policies (such as diversity, equity and inclusion) that are at odds with the current administration. The administration and Republican-led Congress are also seeking to make tax cuts passed during President Donald Trump’s first term permanent, which in a U.S. House budget bill would cost $4.5 trillion.Critics say the tax cuts primarily benefit the wealthy. A U.S. Treasury Department report published in January states households making more than $743,000 annually will see about a 4% increase in after-tax income while households making $96,000 or less would see a 1% average gain. The DOGE site lists more than 6,000 cuts as of Sunday, although many lack sufficient detail to identify the program and/or location affected. The claimed savings of $105 billion are questionable since the total estimates have been drastically revised twice within the past week as more than 40% of the line items, including the five of the largest ones, were deleted or modified due to inaccurate claims, The New York Times reported Monday. Lease cancellations and possible property salesNOAA is among the federal agencies with a significant presence in Juneau, including its roughly 100,000-square-foot Auke Bay Laboratories. The cut listed at DOGE’s website references a 1,595-square-foot NOAA space in Juneau with a reported annual lease cost of $20,520 — with no address listed. Among NOAA’s other Juneau sites is the Alaska Region Office located in the downtown Federal Building — where sources say at least four people were fired last week — and the National Weather Service station in the Mendenhall Valley.Axios reported Tuesday the Trump administration is targeting “key weather buildings” for closure.Mass firings at NOAA began last Thursday that are expected to affect up to 10% of employees during the initial round, although agency officials — as with others in the federal government — aren’t confirming the number of people terminated locally or nationally. Among those expressing frustration about the lack of such data is U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, who has stated she is relying on social media posts among other sources to collect what information she can.Among the biggest Alaska leases on the DOGE website’s canceled list are a 27,770-square-foot Forest Service site in Anchorage listed at about $1.18 million, a 20,326-square foot Geological Survey site in Anchorage at $855,176, a 14,805-square-foot Department of Commerce site in Anchorage at $664,745 and a 19,716-square-foot Rural
