This month, we are thrilled to welcome Dua Lipa back to the cover of Music Week as the global superstar, businesswoman and Glastonbury headliner ushers in the Radical Optimism era.Ahead of the long-awaited release of her third album on May 3, Music Week came face to face with Lipa in London, as she told us she is not only delivering what is set up to be one of the campaigns of 2024, but redefining her entire career. With her publishing and management now part of her own company Radical22, the ultra ambitious star is in full control. Joined by Warner Records president Joe Kentish, who signed her as a teenager 10 years ago, she detailed her plan to inhabit every part of popular culture and discussed confidence, ownership and conquering the music industry.Ahead of the issue dropping next week, when the full interview will also land on musicweek.com, we’re sharing some highlights from an extra special cover story.Dua Lipa on making Radical Optimism“It was about being able to dictate. Before, I wasn’t as confident in my craft. I definitely feel so much better about who I am as an artist and a songwriter, what I want to do and say and how I want to say it.”Dua Lipa on taking control“I think I trusted that other people knew better than me, and in some ways they did because they were more experienced. But I’ve just been learning to follow my gut and do the learning myself, rather than rely on other people’s knowledge.”Dua Lipa on Radical22“It’s about having control over my music, having the final say over what happens to it. As an artist, it’s important to understand that this is a business.”Dua Lipa on Glastonbury“Glastonbury has always been the pinnacle. It’s my favourite festival. I’m so grateful for the trust that Emily [Eavis] has put in me and I’ll make sure it’s great. It’s the biggest show of my life, so I’m gonna make sure I don’t fuck it up!”Dua Lipa on Joe Kentish“I wouldn’t have been able to do this without him. I love it when he comes into the studio – he’s someone who I really want to impress, so every time I play Joe music, I hear things differently and realise what needs to change without him even saying anything.”Dua Lipa on being a ‘pop star’“People want you to speak out about things that you believe in, create a safe space for fans, or talk about current issues or activism. But at the same time, a lot of people want you to not do that and they want their pop stars to just be very quiet, like, ‘Just sing your song and don’t get involved in politics.’”Dua

Some of the singer's fans felt a bond with her due to the dental situation, with one Twitter follower writing, "Queen! We're almost sisters ahah, I've been blessed with 34!" The style icon's fashion choices have 'divided' her fans Jeff Spicer/Getty Images Dua Lipa isn't afraid to take chances when it comes to her style, which is why her fashion choices often earn her a lot of attention — there's even an Instagram account dedicated to her outfits that has over 61,000 followers. "In addition to her award-winning music, the songstress has long been impressing us with her sartorial wild streak, too," Who What Wear noted. "From mesh and thigh-skimming sequins to elegant ballgowns and sharp suiting," there's apparently "no trend" that the singer "can't turn her hand to.""It's not necessarily the putting together of the image that is important, but being able to represent yourself and who you are as an artist that is important to musicians," Lipa explained to Vogue Australia in 2018. "When I get involved in the fashion world, it's another outlet for my creativity, another extension of my music, and who I am as an artist." She added that because "fashion is an extension of what [she'd] like to say" and who she is, she's been aware of what she's wanted to wear "from the very beginning."However, not everyone is into the star's fashion sense. In fact, it's actually "divided" her fans at times, the Evening Standard noted, such as the dress she wore to the 2019 Brit Awards (pictured, above), which one fan felt made her look "Hotter than hell," while another thought it was simply "awkward." Either way, you do you, Dua! Is Dua Lipa a diva? Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images Does Dua Lipa seem approachable to you or does she seem like a snobby celebrity? Apparently, the latter may be true if the way she allegedly acted at the 2019 Brit Awards is any indication. Return. With its upbeat tempo, vibrant production, and catchy melody, the song presents a complex emotional theme in a way that’s both accessible and danceable. Lyrically, Dua Lipa grapples with the question of whether to open herself up to love or protect her heart from the pain of potential heartbreak. The recurring line, “Am I falling in love with the one that could break my heart?” perfectly encapsulates this internal struggle, making the song resonate with anyone who has ever been hesitant about love. Despite the song’s upbeat sound, there’s an underlying feeling of caution and introspection, as Dua navigates the vulnerability that comes with love and relationships. The music video enhances the song’s emotional depth with vibrant visuals and bold, fashion-forward aesthetics, matching the playful yet poignant tone of the song. Throughout the video, Dua Lipa’s expressions and movements convey the tension between confidence and uncertainty, drawing the viewer into the emotional complexity of the song. “Break My Heart” quickly became a fan favorite, thanks to its relatable theme, catchy rhythm, and Dua’s captivating performance. It’s a perfect example of how Dua Lipa can blend infectious pop melodies with thoughtful, introspective lyrics, making it one of the standout tracks on Future Nostalgia.8. We’re Good (2021)“We’re Good,” released in 2021, shows a more introspective and mature side of Dua Lipa, as she reflects on the end of a relationship with a sense of calm acceptance. The song offers a unique perspective on moving on, focusing on the idea that not all relationships need to end in bitterness. Instead, Dua Lipa encourages the listener to find peace in knowing when it’s time to let go. The track features a smooth, laid-back melody that mirrors the song’s theme of closure and self-empowerment. An Oscar?’ Sam winning an Oscar makes me laugh. Yeah, I love casting really good actors because it makes my life a lot easier. I also think when you cast great actors, and you get them to do stuff that they haven’t done, that greatness kicks in because they’re excited. And Sam excels in this movie. He’s so good. This is also Dua Lipa’s first major film role. This was her first film role as well. We did it before Barbie. Just to be clear.Could you talk about what she brings to this character? In the movie, she is the nemesis of Henry Cavill, and I needed someone that you would immediately recognize but also be like, Oh, that’s not what I was expecting. And thank God for my girls because I didn’t know who Dua Lipa was, and they started playing me their music because I’m an ’80s boy. And she did an album inspired by ’80s music, and I thought that’s great. Then I saw her being interviewed, and she was wearing a Valentino dress that I’d say five people in the world would get away with wearing. It looked like a Christmas tree ornament, and she pulled it off. I think a lot of young pop stars are playing to be pop stars; they’re acting as what they think a pop star should be. And then you have the greats, whether it’s Madonna to Taylor Swift, now Dua, where they are the pop star. So I knew she would explode off the screen; she was a delight to work with as well. And, typical Hollywood, people who’ve seen the film, like agents, they’re like ‘who’s the blonde girl? She’s unbelievable.’ And I’m like ‘that’s Dua Lipa.’ You forget it’s her, which is hard to do when you’re very famous. You mentioned this is based on a book that hasn’t been published yet. So this is Elly’s first book and Elly is a character in the film, so I’m just curious how does that work? It’s a little bit like Kick-Ass. With Kick-Ass, there was no comic, there was just the idea. And [that happened] on Kingsman as well. But there was an Argylle book, and I really liked the book, but I just knew that wasn’t how to start a franchise. And with Bryce, Bryce loved the idea of playing an author that no one knew but will know…And I told her, ‘Just imagine you’re J.K. Rowling or you’re Ian Fleming. You’re playing a very famous recluse.’ Because she is a recluse. I think I’m allowed to say that about Elly, because I’ve never met her. I’ve never met other authors [I worked with]. About after the event. According to the Daily Mail, the singer was "accused of 'diva-like' behavior." Hm.The Sun explains that Lipa was reportedly "furious after being given a dressing room close to other guests who were eager to talk to her." A source also noted that "Dua's dressing room was right next to the backstage beauty spa which meant plenty of people were heading past to get pampered before the show." However, the singer "made it clear she didn't want to be there after other guests kept heading in to say hi and wish her good luck." Due to the disruptions, Lipa allegedly "slammed the door closed and ripped her name off it so nobody would realize she was there." Granted, Lipa may have simply wanted a little quiet time, however, in comparison, Harris "made his dressing room a free-for-all" and was letting anyone "in to help him celebrate with a magnum of champagne."However, Lipa didn't seem to care about the supposed situation, as Metro pointed out that following the ceremony, she "was too busy getting down with her pals at the Brits after-party." Dua Lipa is doing pretty darn well for herself money-wise Neilson Barnard/Getty Images Dua Lipa has certainly seen her hard work pay off. While the singer "only began to earn mainstream success in 2017," StyleCaster notes that she "quickly emerged as a money-making machine thanks in part to her radio-ready hits and widespread streaming success." Granted, she's also leveraged her fame to take advantage of other profitable opportunities. The Sun points out that Lipa has landed what are surely lucrative deals with major brands like Jaguar, Adidas, Saint Laurent, and Pepe Jeans. Beyond that, in May 2020, the same media outlet reported that Lipa had filed papers to trademark her name around the world, which would cover "hundreds of items including clothes and cosmetics, as well as computer games, books, jewelry, and even kitchen utensils." An insider explained that Lipa "knows she is in high demand right now and can make a fortune."If that makes it sound like the singer is one busy woman, she definitely isDua Lipa Dua Lipa Dua Lipa Stickers for Sale - TeePublic
Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Whether or not you're familiar with singer-songwriter Dua Lipa, you should probably know that she's the "queen of the kiss-off," according to The New York Times, an artist who "prefers music for 'dance-crying,' songs that traverse darker emotional terrain." However, the "New Rules" hitmaker has also dabbled in "tracks about the thrill of a happy relationship." Frankly, when it comes to the subject matter of her songs, Lipa's main goal is staying true to herself, telling the publication in April 2020, "It's really the way I express myself, and the way that I would talk with my friends, and the way that I am." Something the London-born musician had to learn to accept, though, was her newfound stardom, which sunk in during a studio session with Coldplay's Chris Martin. "I had this realization, 'This is the guy you hear on the radio,'" she previously told NME. "... And at that point, I was like, 'Oh my God. What's happening to me? This is just crazy.'" Granted, the fact that Lipa has millions of fans, billions (yes, billions) of views on YouTube, and has taken home her fair share of industry honors might have also given her a clue to the fact that she's a genuine music industry celebrity. But all that said, here are a few intriguing facts about Dua Lipa that will surely surprise you. Dua Lipa's family members are also relatively popular David M. Benett/Getty Images Dua Lipa may be a star, but she's not the only one in her family who exists in the public eye. Dua's mom, Anesa Lipa, has well over a hundred thousand followers on Instagram and often shares photos of her famous daughter, as well as Dua's younger sister, Rina, and younger brother, Gjin. Anesa also uses her influence to promote both the Sunny Hill Festival and Sunny Hill Foundation, which are initiatives based in Dua's parents' home country of Kosovo.Dua even has a Sunny Hill tattoo, which is apparently her favorite ink. ALICE CHICHE/AFP via Getty Images The U.S. has the largest music market in the world, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. This is hardly surprising, considering the startling influence that American cultural exports like music, movies, and television have abroad. Add to that the historical phenomenon of non-American, English-speaking musicians singing with an Americanized accent, and the misconception that most popular Anglophile musicians are based in the U.S. becomes even more prevalent. Meanwhile, implicit assumptions and biases that whiteness and speaking English are stand-ins for American-ness perpetuate racism both in the music industry specifically and in American culture more broadly.American music is far from homogenous, but influential genres that originated within the U.S. are vast and recognizable. Much of music considered to be "American"—from rock to jazz, country, hip-hop, and rap—was created by Black Americans before being adopted (and often, appropriated) by white musicians. Musical styles and instruments from all over the world have always been folded into the nebulous category that is American music, leaving its boundaries blurry and ever-changing.Stacker combed through music libraries, news reports, and biographies to discover which musicians and bands are frequently mistaken for American acts. Artists who began their music careers in other countries, or spent a significant amount of their life in another country before moving to the U.S., were included on the list. 1 / 25 Kevin Mazur/WireImage // Getty Images Mumford & Sons While bandleader Marcus Mumford sings with an unmistakable British accent, Mumford & Sons' folk and bluegrass-rock sound evokes Appalachia and the American South more than it does London, where the band originated. While speaking, Lipa has a detectable British accent, while her songs have little trace of her London roots. This widespread confusion came to a head in 2019, when the singer took the stage to deliver her acceptance speech after winning a Grammy for her song "Electricity," giving way to a Twitter storm of fans and others expressing their shock after hearing her speaking voice for the first time. Lipa received two Grammy nods in 2024—Song of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media—for "Dance the Night," her contribution to the "Barbie" movie soundtrack. She even made a cameo in the movie: as a mermaid with an American accent. 3 / 25 Michael Ochs Archives // Getty Images Fleetwood Mac Fleetwood Mac began in England with British band members Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie, along with Christine McVie, who joined a couple of years later. Holds a special meaning for me."The family also includes Dua's dad, Dukagjin Lipa, who — on top of being the founder and CEO of REPUBLIKA Communications Agency, the director of the Sunny Hill Festival, and the president of the Sunny Hill Foundation, per his IG bio – was also in an Albanian rock band, according to NME. Dukagjin, who is obviously still very much in love with his wife, was "one of [Dua's] main influences" because she "grew up listening to his music." Nowadays, she refers to him as her BFF while posting photos of the duo when she was younger, as well as on the red carpet — where he sometimes (adorably) escorts her to events. The Grammy-winner was told that she couldn't sing when she was young Mark Horton/Getty Images Dua Lipa's voice is a "vocal conundrum," Diva Devotee explains. A "steely, mesmerizing sound that is husky and deep," it's apparently not a style that everyone is into. In fact, NME notes that when Lipa was just 11 years old, she wanted to join the choir at school. Unfortunately for the future star, a teacher told her that "she couldn't sing." Um...? Although Lipa may not yet have developed the signature vocal skills that she's known for these days, even the next year, she was knocking out Alicia Keys' hit "No One" in front of a crowd.Thankfully, Lipa didn't let the discouragement prevent her from pursuing her goals, which is why she went on to become the most streamed female artist on Spotify UK in 2017 (with "New Rules" being streamed 464 million times in just that one year and "Scared to Be Lonely" racking up 453 million streams), per BBC News. She was also one of the "big winners" at the Brit Awards in 2019, according to Variety, not to mention the fact that she's won two Grammy Awards as of 2020, including one for the best new artist of 2018.We wonder if that teacher would let Lipa join the choir these days.
