Show details Back to top Research computing can be a messy affair and, for me at least, it often looks like the following. First, there is the exploration phase where you often have no strong idea about what you are doing. You play around with the data or simulation, see what there is to see, learning about both your subject domain and, often, the system you are developing on (e.g. MATLAB, Python, R etc) simultaneously. As our understating improves, and the complexity of the narrative increases, the messy script or notebook becomes a tidier one. Structure emerges in the form of reusable functions and classes, initially just for ourselves, but eventually for other people. Documentation that starts out as a few scattered comments becomes more coherent and comprehensive. Your test script evolves into unit tests which become part of a continuous integration process. Your private repository becomes a public one and other people start expressing an interest in your work. You turn your code into a package to allow others to more easily install it and a ‘Getting started’ guide to help onboard them. On and on it goes and the realization hits you: Now you are a software engineer as well as a researcher. A Research Software Engineer maybe? Your journey to this point may be different from the one I outlined above but the end point is usually the same: You’ve written (or are writing) a MATLAB Toolbox and want to know what the best practices are so you can make it as good as can be. Feedback from toolbox authors Yesterday, we got together with a bunch of prominent open-source MATLAB toolbox authors and asked them “What problems do users have with your toolbox?”. The results were illuminating Ideally, everyone could develop and release toolboxes in a way that minimised these problems. Wouldn’t it be great if MathWorks offered advice on how to go about doing that? Well, we’ve got you covered with some new repositories on the MathWorks GitHub organisation MATLAB Toolbox Best Practices: Our current set of suggestions for how a good MATLAB Toolbox should be developed and released. SOLIDWORKS Toolbox is a powerful and complex feature. This topic summarizes some concepts to consider before configuring a Toolbox using SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager. Finding More Information About SOLIDWORKS Toolbox For details about configuring, extending, and using SOLIDWORKS Toolbox, click in SOLIDWORKS. To view this help, you might have to start the Toolbox add-in, using . Using a Shared Toolbox When you install Toolbox, you can have Toolbox data on the local computer or in a shared network location. Storing Toolbox data in a network location is recommended. By using a common location, all SOLIDWORKS users share a consistent set of fastener information. If this is the first time installing, browse to the new shared location where you would like to install the Toolbox. Upgrading an Existing Toolbox Upgrading a Toolbox to a new SOLIDWORKS major release version makes that Toolbox incompatible with computers running prior major release SOLIDWORKS versions. If other computers remain at that prior major release and continue to require a Toolbox configured for that release, you should make a copy of that Toolbox and upgrade that copy. The new SOLIDWORKS installation will upgrade the copy of the Toolbox and the previous SOLIDWORKS installations will continue using the old Toolbox. Configuring Toolbox Access After installation, when you access Toolbox components SOLIDWORKS checks how you have configured Toolbox and makes suggestions to improve access and performance. For accessing the shared network Toolbox (recommended), use a UNC path to the server on which the shared Toolbox was installed. For details, see UNC Format. An administrator can create a password for Toolbox and set permissions and preferences for the workgroup. Restricting access to configuration and setting common preferences ensures consistent Toolbox data. Upgrading Toolbox in a SOLIDWORKS PDM Environment When you upgrade the SOLIDWORKS software, Toolbox is upgraded if parts have been added. If the Toolbox root folder is in a SOLIDWORKS PDM vault, before you start the SOLIDWORKS upgrade, you must prepare the Toolbox folder. On the first system to perform the upgrade, you must use Get Latest Version to download the Toolbox files to the local cache and check. browse Engineer's Toolbox 3D Printing.
