For Mac, it's officially $250, though it tends to go on sale a great deal, and once you have one the company is good at selling you upgrades that are expensive, but seem cheap next to buying the full thing.On the iPad, though, it costs $9.99 on the App Store. It's some writers' sole professional tool and it costs less than a book.Alternatively, there is also Celtx, which used to be practically a clone of Final Draft and has the advantage that it's free on the App Store.As yet, there isn't an iPad version of what might be Final Draft's best competitor on the Mac, Highland 2. It's modern, slick, and it's built by professional, working screenwriters with long success in the industry.They say that an iPad version is in the works, but no release date has been announced yet.Utilities for writersYou could spend all your writing time just checking out utility apps for writers, like dictionaries

For a pro, the $250 cost is a simple business expense that is easily justified.For an aspiring screenplay writer or someone writing for an amateur production, the cost is much harder to justify. And Final Draft charges for major updates, so it’s not just a one-off cost either.There are other apps out there that support Final Draft’s FDX format, so you might want to look at these – including Fade In ($80) and Writer, which is completely free. I may look at these later if there’s sufficient interest.But if you have reasonably serious screenwriting ambitions, and can afford the price, there’s an obvious sense to using the industry-standard software. In my admittedly-limited experience to date, I am firmly sold on the benefits.One compromise – if you can bear to do all your writing on an iPad – is to buy Final Draft Writer on the iPad. For $20, you’d still be using the real thing, albeit while sacrificing some features, and you’d still be up on the deal even if you add in the cost of laptop-quality keyboard for it.Final Draft 10 costs $249.99 from the Mac App Store.
