Check the documentation at Klayout homepage for more details ( It was done with Klayout on Windows. Hopefully, it should not be much different on other systems.Here I show how to create GDS files with the GUI (Graphical User Interface). It's also possible to do it using python or ruby macro. Go to KLayout homepage ( download the version corresponding to your system and install it.Open KLayout editor (not viewer).The first time it opens, a Tip window appears. Check the Don't show this windows again checkbox and click Yes.Click File → Setup to open the Setup window.In Application → Editing Mode, check Use editing mode by default checkbox and click OK. This HowTo will take you from a blank/brand new install of Ubuntu 22.04 or Linux Mint 21 up to the point where you can run OpenROAD to make a GDS-II file of an RTL design.Last updated: Thursday 1st September, 2022 (added analog design tools)Requirements8GB RAM (16GB or more if you’re dealing with big designs)Minimum of 100Gb HDD (the install process peaks at 93GB, then drops off a bit)Neither Ubuntu 22.04 or Mint 21 are officially supported at this time. I’m trying it out anyway 😉 . I have the file so I will share in the GitHub repository. The name is sdt_font.gds. I put also my own font folder using only rectangles: eric_font.gds.Once you have created your font on the same model as the previous file, put your file in the folder C:\Users\username\KLayout\fonts\ (replace username with your Windows username).Then you can chose your own font in the PCell tab:The fill toolI don't use much this tool, but I think it's fun so I will present it rapidly here.Create a new layer. Name it as you like. Mine is named miraitowa.Draw an arbitrary shape in this cell, with layer 255. The size may be in the order of 100um. You can change the stipple in the Layer Toolbox field.
