Catherine Falls Commercial/Getty ImagesWhen you think of grammar checking, the first thing that comes to mind is probably Grammarly -- and with good reason. Grammarly is an outstanding option and even the free version of the tool can help you learn the mistakes you commonly make. There are other options in the automatic grammar-checking space, including LanguageTool. But why would you bother with that service when what is often considered the de facto standard is available? Also: Grammarly's new AI tools for students roll out for back-to-school seasonAlthough LanguageTool might not offer the plethora of suggestions that come from Grammarly, as far as the paid accounts go, LanguageTool is a bit more affordable. Yes, they both offer free accounts, but when you want to get serious about your grammar, a paid account is a worthy upgrade. While Grammarly costs $12.00/month, LanguageTool can be had for as low as $4.99/month. And with a handy browser extension (available for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and Opera), LanguageTool is just as handy as Grammarly. Also: How to fix Grammarly not appearing for Google Docs in SafariLet me show you how to install LanguageTool for Opera, so you can keep your content clean and free from grammar issues. How to install LanguageTool for OperaWhat you'll need: The only things you'll need for this are a running instance of the Opera browser and a LanguageTool account. You can sign up for the free version of LanguageTool and then, if you like the tool, upgrade to a premium plan later on. The first thing to do is head to languagetool.org and create a free account. This includes recognizing adverbs, passive voice, and complex sentences. Once the program highlights the problems, you also get suggestions. Compared to Grammarly, you’ll also get a grading for your writing.Quillbot: Quillbot is more of a WordTune alternative than a Grammarly alternative. While it helps fix the grammar, the major usecase is paraphrasing existing content.Apart from that, you can also consider popular mobile keyboard apps such as Gboard, Swift Keyboard, Samsung Keyboard, and the native iOS keyboard on iOS and Android, where you’ll get many grammar suggestions and typo corrections.Enjoy good writing with these Grammarly AlternativesWhile there are many alternatives to Grammarly, finding the right one takes time. For this list, we made sure to offer tools that are tailored to your needs. However, if you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to drop them in the comment section below.FAQs about Best Grammarly Alternatives Grammarly is unique in that it offers a plagiarism detector in its premium version, which is not available with many grammar checkers like Ginger. Also, it displays the accuracy of the analyzed content, which is not possible with other tools like Ginger or Turnitin. Also, Grammarly Premium can detect problems with word choice, which is not the case with other tools like Ginger. On Android and iOS devices, Grammarly offers a mobile keyboard that provides writing suggestions. Additionally, Grammarly for Safari and Grammarly iPhone Editor are bundled into one app on iOS. Grammarly is no doubt a great tool for grammar checking but it isn't perfect or suitable for all. There are some great Grammarly alternatives with better features like ProWritingAid, WordTune, LanguageTool, etc. that one can consider before opting for Grammarly Premium. Yes, there are several free alternatives to Grammarly that you can use to check your grammar and spelling. They are ProWritingAid, Google Docs, Microsoft Word, LanguageTool, Hemingway App, Ginger, and more. Grammarly is more widely used than Ginger and has a broader range of features of interest to business users and writers who collaborate with others. Ginger has been around for some time, making it a well-known Grammarly alternative. It has a translation feature in more than 40 languages with neural machine translation, which neither Grammarly nor PWA can offer. If you are not a native English speaker, Ginger also offers some grammar tutorials to help you improve your writing skills. For most people, the free version of Grammarly should suffice as a free grammar checker. Other options include Ginger, Linguix, ProWritingAid, LanguageTool, Google Docs, and JetPack. Quillbot is cheaper than Grammarly Premium but has fewer. LanguageTool, free download. 2025-04-15Not sure I ever got to work, even though I tried it in three different browsers. For words it thought were misspelled, it offered both German and English replacements.I can’t think of any reason to choose an “everybody else” site over LanguageTool and/or Scribbr/QuillBot. None of them find as many mistakes as these sites, and many of the also-rans have special drawbacks, e.g., they run slowly, have awkward user interfaces, don’t offer fixes for the errors they find, etc. The only redeeming aspect of the time I spent testing them was discovering the myriad ways it’s possible to do their job badly. The checkers in the following word processors have scores that put them in the same league as the wannabe web sites:Google Docs (32%).Microsoft Word (22%). Most of my testing was done with Office 2010, but some was done with Office 365. I didn’t notice any difference in their performances. If you’re already using these programs to compose your text, there’s no harm in taking advantage of their checking tools. Just don’t fool yourself into thinking that if they say you’re writing’s clean, it is.The top-scoring dedicated checkers, LanguageTool and Scribbr/QuillBot, have the interesting characteristic that each tends to find errors the other misses. Running both of them, one after the other, raises their combined score to 82%. That’s not quite as high as ChatGPT’s 86%, much less Claude’s 95%, but it’s high enough that the LanguageTool+Scribbr/QuillBot approach is the one I use. I’ll explain why below.LLM ChatbotsLLM chatbots are under very active development, so what’s true of them today may not be true tomorrow. Over the course of two months, one LLM chatbot went from getting a perfect score on The Sentences to getting credit for only five of the six, then back to getting a perfect score again. You should view the information that follows as merely a snapshot of LLM chatbot behavior as of August 2024.In the competition to find and fix errors, Claude and ChatGPT eat Gemini and Copilot for lunch. Look at the numbers:Claude (95%)ChatGPT (86%)Gemini (47%)Copilot (42%)This is partially due to length restrictions. Copilot accepts inputs of up to only 2000 characters. That’s less than a page of text. Two of my Documents are longer than that, so Copilot checked only part of them. I could have broken them into pieces and checked the pieces individually, but I don’t pander to my proofreading tools.Gemini also seems to have a length limitation, but it’s not on how much text you input, it’s on how much it outputs. It seems to be restricted to about 4600 characters. That’s less than the length of one of the Documents, so if it found errors beyond the 4600 character mark, it had no way to tell me.Even without these limitations, Gemini and Copilot would trail Claude and ChatGPT by a notable margin. They’re just not as good at finding mistakes. Nor are they as good as LanguageTool and Scribbr/QuillBot, much less them in combination. Look:Claude (95%)ChatGPT (86%)LanguageTool+Squibbr/Quillbot (82%)Squibbr/QuillBot (67%)LanguageTool (66%)Gemini
