The alternative decoders do NOT allow you to play more files, that was correct. However, you forgot another point as well. They mentioned that these alternative decoders are only useful in specific circumstances (for example, Screen Monkey requires FFdshow filter to be enabled, even though LAV filter was activated as the default filter). K-Lite was formerly used FFdshow filters as default for older versions, before opted for LAV filter instead as default filter for new versions while retaining FFdshow

To add the new external filters. Double-click on 'LAV Video Decoder' in the list, and this will open the properties page shown below. Next double-click on the 'LAV Audio Decoder' to configure the audio settings. Here you can configure things like Dynamic Range Compression, Bitstreaming, Output formats, Mixing, and more.
