With just under a gig of samples, the presets load up pretty quick. I tried comparing a similar Rhodes sound between the two, and I could get them somewhat close by tweaking a few things here and there. I think the difference comes down to sampling vs. modelling technology. Velvet has the Fender Rhodes Mark 1, Mark2, SC73, the Wurly A200, and the Hohner Pianet, and 350+ presets. Here for the gear Joined: Jun 2016 🎧 5 years No Contest when Solo'd I have the EP-4 lounge Lizard and have used it on various tracks. It works, it sounds good, it's very stable, no major complaints. I just downloaded the demo of the new Rhodes V8 plugin and tested it alongside the EP-4 and OMG !!!!! There is no comparison at all between them. Having played real Rhodes pianos, I know how a Rhodes should sound and the dynamics of the keys and the changes in timbre with those dynamics. The EP-4 is not even close to a real Rhodes in terms of dynamics and the way the timbre changes with key velocity and finger position on the keyboard. When you hit the keys really hard, you can make a real Rhodes growl and then sing with the sweetest tone when you just touch those keys, so it's super expressive. The EP-4 doesn't do this at all. Also, the way the tines jangle on a real Rhodes depends on how hard you hit the keys and your finger positions on the keyboard. As for the Rhodes V8 plugin, it's pretty close to what a real Rhodes can do. It has the touch sensitivity. The timbral changes sound very realistic as the plugin interacts with your playing. And when you hit those keys hard, you get that growl on the plugin. To get the most out of it, you need a decent fully weighted keyboard to play it with, not just a 24 note cheap plastic midi controller.The sound difference between the two plugins when solo'd would be like comparing a black and white fax image with a high resolution colour image of a landscape. But here's the kicker, when using the EP-4 in a full mix, it sounds very credible, because you really don't hear the dynamics or tonal changes much when just playing backing chords. But the EP-4 doesn't stand by itself as a credible Rhodes when solo'd. The V8 plugin has the sound and response to play solo and it's very convincing. There are other plugins which are good like the Spectrasonics Rhodes (Keyscape) and also there's one by a little known manufacturer called Premiere Sound Factory, who's Rhodes has great touch sensitivity, 96kHz 24 bit samples, and that characteristic Growl and tine sound of a real Rhodes, and is considerably cheaper than the V8. The V8 has tons of presets and effects, and I could find a sound for every style of music I'd use a Rhodes for. If you want a detailed solo instrument, then the V8 wins hands down. If you just want to add a few major / minor 7th chord stabs to your R&B , Hip Hop or Drum 'n' Bass track, the V8 isn't worth the extra money, stay with the EP-4 or go with one of the many other plugin emulations out there, some of which are about one quarter the price of the V8 and still sound good.
