Update: Finale 2014.5 has been released. On Sept 28, MakeMusic announced that Finale 2014 would not be compatible with El Capitan, Apple’s latest operating system, upon its release on Sept 30. At that time we indicated it was our hope that Apple would resolve this incompatibility, but if they didn’t we’d provide a solution in Finale 2014.5, a free-of-charge update for owners of Finale 2014 scheduled for release by the end of November. To be clear, two issues stood in the way of Finale compatibility, having to do with accessing and closing frequently used dialog boxes.Apple has subsequently fixed one of these issues in their latest update (10.11.1). While 10.11.1 doesn’t currently represent a solution for Finale 2014 or PrintMusic users, we’re cautiously optimistic on the second issue and continue to work with Apple to resolve it.One frequently-asked question on our blog concerns PrintMusic 2014 compatibility with El Capitan. Should Apple not resolve this remaining issue, we will provide a solution for owners of PrintMusic 2014, but these details and their timing have not yet been finalized. In the meantime, Finale 2014.5 remains our top priority as it also offers many additional enhancements to Windows users as well as Mac users on previous operating systems.Photo by Rainer Marks, licensed under Public Domain via Wikimedia Commons. MakeMusic has released Finale version 27.4, the fourth update to Finale v27. The main objective of this update is to provide official support for running Finale under macOS Sonoma (macOS 14). Finale is a universal binary application, meaning it will run natively on Apple Silicon (M1, M2, etc.) as well as older Macs with Intel processors.Subsequent to the November 29, 2023 release of v27.4, on December 12, 2023 MakeMusic released Finale v27.4.1, a hot fix update to address several issues in the v27.4 release. The v27.4 update is the first update to Finale in more than a year. In addition to ensuring compatibility with Sonoma and addressing any issues specific to that OS, Finale v27.4 adds some small but helpful items and fixes some longtime bugs.Finale v27.4, running in macOS SonomaThe videoJason conquers this update with a new “Conquering Finale” video. It’s the little things that count! The updatesSymbols and elision slurs in lyricsIt’s easier now on Mac to insert a symbol in the Lyrics Window (Tools > Lyrics > Lyrics Window…). When you’re in the Lyrics Window, simply choose Insert Symbol… from the menu, to bring up the full Symbol Selection dialog, which will give you access to the entire range of Unicode characters.A practical implementation of this improvement is the ability to add elision slurs when typing directly into the score. (Longtime Finale users will know the tortuous method of typing a capital I and switching to the Engraver Font Set to achieve this result). There is a specific Insert Elision menu item now, with a corresponding shortcut, Option+Shift+Command+-, to do this easily.Behind the scenes, Finale inserts the elision symbol in the Finale Lyrics font and then switches back to the font you’re using for lyric entry (Academico in this example).Print to true blackNearly all music is printed in black and white — but with Finale, it was more like a dark shade of grey for some Mac users, for many years. Documented on Scoring Notes with workarounds, the current Finale forum, and the old Finale forum, this truly qualifies as a longstanding issue, and it is very nice to see it addressed. In Finale v27.4, there is a new option in the Print dialog that should hopefully solve this problem once and for all. In Finale Print Options, in the Print: section, there is a new Use RGB option. Uncheck this box to ensure that the PDFs that youFinale PrintMusic By MakeMusic - Broadjam
While Finale 26 does not list compatibility with my old operating system, it seems to run just fine on my ten year old MacBook. #Finale 2014 el capitan pro I also have a REALLY OLD MacBook, a 2008 Aluminum MacBook (renamed MacBook Pro a few months later) that is stuck on OS X El Capitan. In terms of platform, MakeMusic is not pursuing iOS, and I use my iPad Pro for 98% of my computing needs. Don’t get me wrong, I still use it, but I use it as a part of a process instead of as the whole process as I did earlier in my career. The greatest challenges with this case use were the old challenges of interacting with MIDI, controlling playback in rehearsal, programming tempo changes, and having that become accustomed to how an accompaniment should sound when a live pianist, in performance, does not hold a steady tempo and makes mistakes!Īdmittedly, my own use of Finale has decreased over the last few years, partly because of platform, and partly because of features. Generally, I have not used Finale as much as a publishing tool, but instead as an accompanist for my choirs. That said, I’ve used Finale as a tool as a choral music educator, in the classroom, since my first position in the Dominican Republic since 1996. I don’t claim to be the expert on Finale that Robert Puff and Philip Rothman are and I wouldn’t dream of pitting my skills against the publishing teams at Hal Leonard or Alfred, nor against the team at Make Music. That means a quarter century of Finale use. I have been teaching 23 years, so I imagine that puts me at over twenty-five years of Finale use. If you have been in the music world for any period of time, you’ll know that Coda Music eventually became MakeMusic, and Vivace later became SmartMusic. We were expected to use Finale, and even played with the “new” Vivace hardware (at the time). My first exposure to Finale was in college, where one of my professors had worked at Coda Music. I have been using Finale for a very long time.
