Burns Philp shareholders, chairman Alan McGregor succinctly noted that, "we do not have the time or resources required to generate the returns necessary from the herb and spice businesses." Instead, Burns Philp would regroup and refocus on its still-profitable yeast business, using proceeds from the sale to reduce its debt and to take advantage of unspecified "current opportunities." Burns Philp also announced that managing director Ian Clack, who had initiated the company's purchase of Tone's and its entry into the global spice business, had decided to retire. And, two days later, Burns Philp publicly disclosed that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission was investigating the spice industry for possible anti-competitive activity. Burns Philp executives claimed that the investigation centered on McCormick's use of "slotting fees," which had set off the spice war. However, they acknowledged that the FTC had subpoenaed Burns Philp's records as well. Future Outlook In July 1997 Burns Philp announced that Tom Degnan, former vice-president at Universal Foods Corporation (a global food company based in the United States), would become its new managing director. Degnan would bring with him extensive experience in global operations and in the yeast business, which Burns Philp hoped to make its core operation once it had sold its other holdings. As of August 1997 no definite buyer for Tone's had stepped forward, although one analyst suggested that major food companies such as Nestle Food Co. or H.J. Heinz Co. might be interested. It was unclear whether Burns Philp would sell Tone's as part of a package of several companies or on its own, or perhaps it would reconsider the sale altogether. Moreover, Tone's was faced with another problem more far-reaching than business mergers and sales. In July 1997 pepper prices rose to their highest level ever, rising 70 percent since May alone. This increase was due to the combined forces of market speculation and (more seriously) drought conditions in Brazil and Indonesia, two of the major producers of pepper. This event was expected to cause a major long-term expense for a company that purchased several million pounds of pepper each year. Tone's, a well-known name in spices, faced an uncertain future. P-SPICE (or any simulator) can be a very effective tool in synthesizing power supply control loops. In this Power Tip, we P-SPICE to design a control loop for the integrated, synchronous buck shown in Figure 1 . This IC uses a transconductance error amplifier and internal voltage reference. The output voltage is sampled through R6 and R7 and is compared to an internal reference of 0.8 volts. The error amplifier generates a current out of the COMP pin (8) that is proportional to the difference. The current then flows through the compensation impedances to ground and generates a voltage which controls inductor L1 current to maintain output voltage regulation. The IC uses current mode control (CMC) to effectively turn the output inductor L1 into a current source. The current in L1 varies proportionally to the error amplifier voltage on the COMP pin. The inductor current then flows through the output capacitor and load resistance to generate a voltage which closes the loop. Click on image to enlarge.
