The translation is the work of Brian Simmons, leader of Passion and Fire Ministries, and is published by BroadStreet Publishing Group. They told US magazine Christianity Today that Bible Gateway had "made the disappointing decision to discontinue their license for The Passion Translation". Bible Gateway is a popular online Scripture platform offering 90 versions of the Bible in the English language.BroadStreet said the removal of the TPT translation came into effect last month. "While no explanation was given, BroadStreet Publishing accepts that Bible Gateway has the right to make decisions as they see fit with the platforms they manage," they told Christianity Today magazine in a statement.TPT was released in 2017 and is billed by BroadStreet as "a modern, easy-to-read Bible translation that unlocks the passion of God's heart and expresses his fiery love—merging emotion and life-changing truth."It is popular with charismatics and counts Bill Johnson, senior pastor of Bethel Church in Redding, California, among its fans. In an endorsement on the TPT website, he describes reading the translation as "one of the great new experiences of my life in recent years". Critics, however, have said the TPT should be classed as paraphrasing rather than a translation. The New International Version (NIV) is a completely original translation of the Bible developed by more than one hundred scholars working from the best available Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts.The initial vision for the project was provided by a single individual – an engineer working with General Electric in Seattle by the name of Howard Long. Long was a lifelong devotee of the King James Version, but when he shared it with his friends he was distressed to find that it just didn’t connect. Long saw the need for a translation that captured the truths he loved in the language that his contemporaries spoke.For 10 years, Long and a growing group of like-minded supporters drove this idea. The passion of one man became the passion of a church, and ultimately the passion of a whole group of denominations. And finally, in 1965, after several years of preparatory study, a trans-denominational and international group of scholars met in Palos Heights, Illinois, and agreed to begin work on the project – determining to not simply adapt an existing English version of the Bible but to start from scratch with the best available manuscripts in the original languages. Their conclusion was endorsed by a large number of church leaders who met in Chicago in 1966.A self-governing body of fifteen biblical scholars, the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT) was formed and charged with responsibility for the version, and in 1968 the New York Bible Society (which subsequently became the International Bible Society and then Biblica) generously undertook the financial sponsorship of the project. Your Bible translation matters because it affects how you understand Scripture. However, I would encourage all Christians to have at least one physical Bible that they use for personal study and reference.2 A Study BibleThe next tool I recommend is a reputable study Bible in another translation. I highly encourage you to study your Bible in multiple translations.
