And sometimes - very occasionally - everyone is right: Torment is the gaming world's very own Citizen Kane, the work of an auteur rather than a mere author, with writing, characterisation and pacing that make it stand out from its contemporaries and which give it timeless qualities that ensure a place in top 20 lists for as long as people appreciate the medium. The original remit was to create a game in the AD&D Planescape setting, a campaign setting that gave you an entire multiverse to play in. As far as I'm aware, Torment is unique in this regard. Beyond that, the developers sought to create an atypical fantasy game in every respect: there is sorcery, to be sure, but no swords (actually, there's one, but you can't use it until you make it not-a-sword), no shields and no armour that your character can use. Dwarves and elves are noticeable by their absence; your companions include a disembodied skull, a delightfully characterised demoness and a mechanical creature from the plane of Mechanus. The exotic setting allows the art design to transcend the cod-medieval as well - it feels closer to Star Wars than Tolkien. The art design is serviceable enough but what stands out in Torment is the depth and quality of the writing. The game asks you to consider the meaning of life for a man condemned to live in an eternal present. For this incarnation at least, the Nameless One is deliberately offered as a blank page on which you can write your own story: you can make him a saint or a monster, an honest dealer or a compulsive liar, a naïf, a clown or a wise man and all shades between. The peripheral cast of characters are complex and memorable, from your companions to the bit-players. And the environmental story telling is peerless: no other game I have played made me imagine the experience of an insect metamorphosing into a human. When you find yourself considering whether or not to join a faction because you care about their philosophy, then you are properly invested. The Enhanced EditionBesides acquiring an additional and ungainly colon, you may legitimately wonder in what ways Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition has been enhanced. Fundamentally, the improvements are resolution and streamlining. 2025-04-08This article is a stub. You can help Torment Wiki by expanding it.Character Class represents a character's skill set. Planescape: Torment handles classes differently than most RPGs in that the main character, The Nameless One, is allowed to switch classes at will with the help of trainers and practitioners.Fighter[]Fighters are weapons focused warriors, trained to fight with skill and strategy. They are more durable and tough than other classes, able to take more hits and help prevent enemies from attacking weaker characters like Mages, Thieves and Priests. The Nameless One starts off as a Level 3 fighter when he wakes up for the first time in the Mortuary. He may switch classes later on in the game.Mage[]Main article: SpellWhat mages lack in constitution and hardiness, they make up for in sheer power. Mages keep their distance in battle, relying on their spells to disable, confuse and deal great amounts of damage to enemies.Thief[]Thieves favor speed and dexterity over brute force in combat. They are more fragile than fighters, but also more deadly. Outside of combat, they have some very useful abilities, such as opening locked doors and containers, detecting and disarming traps, etc.Priest[]Priests focus on the protection and healing of allies in combat through their spells, but they are equally equipped to disable enemies coming their way. Priests cannot use edged weapons. The Nameless One cannot become a priest himself, but he can recruit a companion that is: Fall-from-Grace.Class Mechanics[]Switching Classes[]The Nameless One can switch classes at will with the help of trainers and practitioners. When he switches, he retains his level and abilities from the previous class, but will be unable to use them. This means he can be a Level 5 Fighter / Level 8 Mage, but if he just switched back to being a fighter, he will not be able to cast any mage spells he might have learned until he becomes a mage again. However, TNO always keep the best out of all his base THAC0 and Saves, as well as his weapon proficiencies and Hit Points (for example, a Level 5 Fighter / Level 8 Mage TNO will have a THAC0 of 16, since a Fighter 5 has a THAC0 of 16 and a Mage 8 has a THAC0 of 18).Also, Hit Points are only gained in full the first time a particular level is reached, with the Hit Die of the class that reaches that level. Afterwards, reaching that same level with other classes will only increase TNO's Hit Points by 1. Also, he can only increase an Attribute by 1 when he reaches a particular level the first time. For example, if TNO reaches level 7 with Fighter first, he will gain (1d10+Con Bonus) Hit Points. If he then reaches level 7 with Thief or Mage, he will only gain 1 HP.Thus, if TNO levels up as Fighter first, he will gain more HP than if he levels up as Thief first, and if he levels up as Thief first he will gain more HP than if
