Software vendor websites. For instance, to install LibreOffice, the popular free and open source alternative to MS Office, you visit the libreoffice.org website, then click on download, then select .deb format. Once the .deb file(sometimes it’s zipped) is downloaded to your Chromebook, move it to the Linux files folder (or sub-folders if you created them) using the Files App. However, I discourage using this method. I tried to install popular software such as Firefox or Libreoffice and failed. For one, I couldn’t find a single .deb file for either software. Secondly, it’s very manual, because even if you got the .deb, you might have to install additional dependencies manually which can be very frustrating. So I gave up on .deb files. But should go down this route, use the following commands to install a .deb file. $ sudo dpkg -i /path/to/deb/file $ sudo apt-get install -f Using Apt command line toolSo far, the easiest way to install Linux apps on your Chromebook is to use the ‘apt’ command line tool. This assumes you’re using the default Debian-based Linux container which is installed by your Chromebook. Apt is software package manager for Debian-based Linux distros. It will install the software package and all its dependencies automatically without additional effort on your part. You simply have to specify the exact package name, otherwise it might fail to find the package name. apt linux package managerTo install a package, run apt-get install [package name]. You might want to prefix that with ‘sudo’ which gives you root or administrative privileges. Usually the software vendor will specify the exact package name usually on their website, but if you’re not sure, you can run a search first using apt search [package name] which will return a response of possible candidates. $ sudo apt install firefox-esrTo uninstall the software, simply run;$ sudo apt-get purge [package name]Using flatpakflathub.org, the flatpak. A laptop that runs Google's ChromeOS and Chrome Web browser. Introduced in 2011, Chromebooks were designed as an Internet appliance that provides a more secure system than Windows or Mac because data are stored in the Google cloud (see Google Drive), and all apps come from the Chrome Web Store. Chrome-based tablets came out in 2018 (see ChromeOS).Widely adopted in schools, an Internet connection is mandatory, but some apps may run offline. Chromebooks boot up fast and require minimal user configuration. They also come with Google's office suite (see Google Docs). In 2017, Microsoft introduced a Chromebook competitor (see Windows 10 S).Limited StorageDesigned for saving user data in the cloud, Chromebooks typically have from 16GB to 32GB of local SSD storage, although some models have 128GB. However, Chromebooks may accept SD cards for more storage. Finally Network FriendlyEarly versions of the ChromeOS did not recognize shared folders on other computers in a home or office network like Windows and Mac computers do. Eventually, file sharing apps came out that recognized file shares. However, in 2018, native support for SMB file sharing was finally added with ChromeOS 70, enabling Chromebooks to access Windows and Mac computers on the network (see SMB).Android and Linux as WellChromeOS, Android and Linux are all based on the Linux kernel. In 2016, Chromebooks were updated to run Android apps, opening the platform to thousands of applications from the Google Play store. In 2018, the Debian version of Linux was added, making the Chromebook a very versatile computing platform. Both Android and Linux run in software-based containers, which prevent an Android or Linux app from compromising the security of the Chromebook, a feature highly touted by Google.Stable, Beta and Developer ChannelsBy switching the OS to the Beta channel, users can review apps that are still in test mode. At a higher risk, brand new features of the OS itself can be tried out by switching to the Developer channel.Desktop and Tablet ChromebooksIn 2012, Google introduced the Chromebox, a desktop Chromebook in a mini PC footprint. In 2018, Chromebook tablets debuted (see examples below). See mini PC.Chromebook PlusIn 2023, the Plus model features 128GB of storage, a better IPS screen, AI capability and built-in Google apps. Magic Eraser removes unwanted backgrounds in images and a subscription to Photoshop online is available. See IPS panel.A Chromebook KeyboardSome, but not all, Chromebooks have dedicated Web browsing keys, such as the Back, Forward and Reload buttons on the top row of this Acer keyboard. We will hopefully remove the dependency to libglu1 and we are going to implement detection of removable media in a similar way to the other operating systems. Unfortunately we will not be able to eject the removable media from PrusaSlicer on Chrome OS.
