The Daily Halacha Moment - Instruments, Alarm Clocks & Noise on Shabbat 🕒 ״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן ‎העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a) Question:What are some examples of permitted or prohibited acts of making noise on Shabbat?May one whistle on Shabbat? May one place a music player on a timer to play music on Shabbat? May one set an alarm before Shabbat to ring on Shabbat? Answer:One may not use a utensil to tap on the table or on a bottle in a rhythm, but one may tap on a glass in order to get people’s attention. Similarly, whoever is capable of protesting the practice many people have of beating silverware onto the table or plates to accompany the Shabbat singing should do so. There is no valid basis to be lenient in this matter even when celebrating a newlywed couple on their Shabbat Chattan. One who protests this practice fulfills a very important mitzvah, however, one should protest in a respectable way. [1]One may pick up a sefer Torah even though the rimonim have bells on them. [2]A child may play with toys that can make sounds when they are shook (if they are non-electric), since the sounds being made are not considered music or have any rhythm. [3]It is permitted to whistle with one’s mouth on Shabbat. [4] However, one may not blow and make a sound with a whistle on Shabbat. [5] Nonetheless, some poskim say that it is proper for a Ben Torah to refrain from whistling all together. One may not set a timer on a stereo or speaker that will turn on during Shabbat and play music. [6] Nonetheless, one may set an alarm clock before Shabbat to ring on Shabbat. [7]Sources:[1]. However, one may not shake the rimonim on the sefer Torah to hear them jingle. See also Mishnah Berurah 339:8; Mishpetei Uziel 1:13; Yechaveh Daat 3:49; Chazon Ovadia, Sukkot, p. 458.[3]. Regarding whistling by putting one’s fingers in one’s mouth and blowing, some poskim, such as the Aruch HaShulchan 338:7 and Shemirat Shabbat KeHilchatah, ch. 16, footnote 9, permit doing so. However, Mishneh Halachot 4:52 does not permit doing so. See also in Piskei Teshuvot 338:4.[5]. Be’er Moshe 6:28; Chazon Ovadia, Shabbat, vol. 5, p. 236; Shemirat Shabbat KeHilchatah 16:2.[6]. Jerusalem“Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)To be released from earthly fears and grow in fear of the Lord is essential to living in perfect shalom and accessing the wisdom, guidance, and power of our Awesome God.So central to Jewish thinking is not being afraid that it is recited at the end of the Jewish Shabbat service as well as in the daily evening prayer. The people say,Adonai li; lo ira — יְהוָ֣ה לִ֭י לֹ֣א אִירָ֑א:God is with me; I shall not fear.(Psalm 118:6; also Isaiah 41:10)Men wearing tallit (prayer shawls) read from their siddurs (prayer books).God’s teaching about fear is central in His Scriptures. The Bible mentions fear 400 times, showing us that God anticipated our propensity to be afraid and our need of His assurance and guidance. In fact, do not fear! (in Hebrew, Al-tirah! – אַל־תִּירָא֙) is the most often repeated command in the Bible, appearing 51 times! The Hebrew יִרְאָה – yirah is usually translated as fear, the emotion that initiates a host of chemical changes in our brains and bodies, preparing us to either fight, freeze, or flee from any real or perceived danger. In that automatic response, there is no time for accessing God’s will or wisdom in our lives. So, how do we live in His wisdom during these fearful situations?King Solomon tells us that “the fear of the Lord [not man or circumstances] is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 9:10)Let’s look at some important examples of how to acquire a healthy fear of the Lord, which gives us wisdom, and how we can prevent the unhealthy fears that keep God’s influence out of our lives.Fear Not PeoplePeople can be intimidating, but as one rabbinic sage (the Gerer Rebbe) said:“If a man has fear of anything except the Creator, he is in some degree an idolater. For to fear is to offer worship to the thing feared, and this form of worship may be offered only to the Lord.”

Should be placed in a separate bag or to the side of the Tefillin. ↑ Mishna Brurah 25:3 writes that the law that one may not pass up a mitzvah only applies when one intends to do the mitzvah. ↑ This follows clearly from the above Mishna Brurah but is written as an example in Halachot of Tefillin by Rabbi Shlomo Churba (page 7) quoting Or Letzion (vol 2, 44:16). ↑ Kaf HaChaim 25:8 writes that since one does not intend to use the Tallit of Shabbat now one is permitted to take the Tallit of the weekday even if it is underneath. ↑ Rama 25:1 writes that if one has Tefillin but not a Tallit one should not wait for the Tallit but rather just put on the Tefillin. The Magen Avraham 25:2 understands that this is the case even if there is no concern that one will miss Sof Zman Kriyat Shema. Mishna Brurah 25:7 agrees. However, the Machaneh Chaim (Mehudra Kama 2), Sh”t Shenot Chaim 36, Kaf HaChaim 25:10, Yalkut Yosef (Sherit Yosef 1 pg 319), and Halacha Brurah 25:10 argue that one should wait to put on the Tallit as long as one will not miss the time for Kriyat Shema. ↑ Mishna Brurah (Beiur Halacha s.v. Vayitztarech) writes that the principle of putting on the Tallit before Tefillin is relevant also in a case where one took off the Tallit and Tefillin momentarily and now comes to put them back on. This is quoted in Yalkut Yosef (Sherit Yosef 1 pg 318), Halacha Brurah (Birur Halacha 25:2), Amudei HaShulchan 10:2, and Divrei Shalom (vol 1 pg 15). ↑ Ben Ish Chai (Vayera 4, Sh”t Rav Poalim 1:4) writes that if someone is only wearing Tefillin and a Tallit becomes available, one should remove one’s Tefillin before putting on the Tallit. This is also the opinion of the Sh”t Torah Lishmah 1. However, the Rama 25:1 writes that if one has only Tefillin one should put them on and when one gets a Tallit one should don the Tallit implying that one does not need to
