Beginning life on the long-defunct PlayStation Portable, Silent Hill: Origins is the first mainline entry in the series that wasn’t developed by Team Silent. Instead, the project was helmed by Climax Studios, which would go on to do ports for the likes of Assassin’s Creed Chronicles, as well as assist in the development of Returnal. So, not a bad career, overall. However, because Origins only came to the PSP and eventually the PS2, it would have been easy to miss this one. As the name suggests, it’s very much a prequel, beginning before the events of the first game. Everyone loves an origin story and this game is no different, putting us in the shoes of trucker Travis Grady as he comes face-to-face with some familiar characters. Earning a Metacritic score of 78% on PSP – just beating The Room – suggests this entry had a lot going for it. I’m sad that I missed out, truth be known. Another one from Climax Studios, the developer obviously had something about it that meant it was more than capable of creating a high-quality Silent Hill game. 2025-04-04“ Did you see those monsters? Have you ever seen such aberrations? Ever even heard of such things? You and I both know, creatures like that don't exist!—Kaufmann expressing disbelief to Harry Mason after killing a monster ” Dr. Michael Kaufmann is a character in Silent Hill. He is also featured in Silent Hill: Origins, a prequel to the first game, as well as in the first game's re-imagining, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.Biography[]He is the director of Alchemilla Hospital located in Central Silent Hill. While he refers to himself as someone who works at the hospital, Dr. Michael Kaufmann is the director of the medical staff at Alchemilla Hospital. While at first seeming like a mere civilian, he is a close associate of Dahlia Gillespie and the Order. Kaufmann has an alliance with her centered around drugs. Kaufmann arranged Alessa Gillespie's medical care after her immolation at the age of seven and oversaw her nursing. Kaufmann dealt the hallucinogen PTV, derived from a local plant called White Claudia. Kaufmann worked alongside his colleague, Norman Young, selling PTV and receiving a considerable profit in the process. The Order was responsible for the dispersion to tourists as well as Lisa Garland, one of Kaufmann's nurses. Lisa was forced to care for Alessa in the hospital basement against her will, under threat of drug withdrawal. During the introduction sequence of Silent Hill, Lisa is shown arguing with Kaufmann after he initially tries to grasp her arm as she walks away. After Alessa split her soul, as she was horribly burned during the cult's ritual to birth the god of the town, her mother Dahlia took Alessa to the hospital to be kept out of sight until the other half of her soul returned so she could give birth to the cult's prime deity; Kaufmann is shown in a flashback as having been displeased with this task. Perhaps in mistrust, he kept samples of Aglaophotis, a substance capable of aborting the "god" within Alessa, in his office and in the gas tank of a motorcycle parked in Norman's Motel. A substitute body was also left at the scene by Kaufmann.[1]Silent Hill: Origins[] Michael Kaufmann in Origins. Upon entering Alchemilla Hospital near the start of the game, Travis Grady encounters Kaufmann near the elevator. Travis questions Kaufmann on the condition of Alessa, whom he rescued from her immolation, but Kaufmann denies any knowledge of the incident. Tiring of

2025-04-06Already exists. If this is starting to make your head hurt, join the club. How did one of the most cerebral, violent, terrifying, and creative creatures in all of horror become just another piece of Hot Topic merchandise? The answer to that question really shouldn’t surprise horror fans. Actually, we’ve seen the same thing happen to Freddy Krueger and so many of the genre’s other once-feared figures. Why Is Pyramid Head So Popular? While some horror game figures have stood the test of time, others that seemed so significant in the moment have since fallen by the wayside. How many people remember Dead Space’s Hive Mind or Resident Evil’s Plant 42? Relatively few, yet, everyone remembers Pyramid Head. What makes him so different? Strangely enough, the answer has something to do with Pikachu.Because gamers loved Pyramid Head so much, Konami turned him into the Silent Hill franchise’s mascot. Because of that new position, the company pushed to include Pyramid Head in as many properties as they could. When the Silent Hill movie was in production, those involved probably figured it would be best to include monsters from the franchise that most people would recognize, regardless of their familiarity with the franchise. Since Pyramid Head for the bill, he was a shoo-in (along with the Bubble-Head Nurses). When that film and rendition of Pyramid Head proved popular, Konami probably used that knowledge to push Silent Hill: Homecoming’s developers into including the creature in the game (as well as ask other developers to let Pyramid Head cameo in other titles). To put it bluntly, Konami kept cramming Pyramid Head down our throats, but since he had left such a positive impression in his first outing, audiences accepted it.Pyramid Head fever encompassed the Silent Hill series so much that even when the monster didn’t make it into a game, he was still there in spirit. Silent Hill Origins’ Butcher comes to mind since, like Pyramid Head, he is an executioner-type creature who wears a metal contraption on his head (or half of it) and wields an oversized cutting implement. Plus, the Butcher is supposed to mirror the worst, violent tendencies of the game’s protagonist, Travis Grady. But the connection runs even deeper since Masahiro Ito created a Pyramid Head lookalike for a tie-in comic included with Silent Hill Origins’ Japanese version. Another Pyramid Head doppelganger of note is Silent Hill: Downpour’s Bogeyman — not to be confused with Silent Hill: Homecoming’s Bogeyman, who is Pyramid Head in everything but name. Again, like Pyramid Head, the Bogeyman is a pursuer-type enemy who crops up throughout his game and is a dark reflection of the main character, Murphy Pendleton. Although, to Silent Hill: Downpour’s credit, their Bogeyman isn’t a cheap knockoff and actually represents the demonization of people Murphy believes guilty of a crime. Most players didn’t care, though; they only saw the Bogeyman Pyramid Head wannabes, which made them fall in love with the OG Pyramid Head even more. The irony of demonizing a character meant
2025-04-02The Carrion is a monster appearing in Silent Hill: Origins. Carrion is the second creature that Travis Grady first encounters in Silent Hill's Cedar Grove Sanitarium, then in the streets from that point onward.A larger variant known as Carrion Mother appears later on the west side of Old Silent Hill.[1]Appearance and symbolism[]It resembles a skinned creature that is kneeling on its front legs. It generally is a dark red/fleshy color and its tongue hangs out of its mouth. It moves in a cumbersome fashion, slowly pushing with its shaky back legs, which almost appear to be made of wood, to get around, while its head and front legs drag. A bigger version of the creature, known as Carrion Mother, arrives once Travis passes the Artaud Theater, towering over the smaller ones and now taking on a much more dirty coloration. The Carrion Mother also roams the streets of Nowhere.Character[]The Carrion are unpredictable and boast an amazing attack range. Their method of attack consists of a leaping body slam, which can inflict serious damage, rendering those who are not cautious with their health dead. Travis fighting a Carrion. Engaging a Carrion with a short-range weapon is very risky (save for the Moon Gauntlets), so firearms are the most suitable choice of weapon; however, the Carrion's leap can cover many feet in distance, which, combined with a surprising ability to quickly turn on the spot, makes the Carrion lethal in packs and best avoided altogether as to not waste ammunition and health. Should an attack with a melee weapon be unavoidable, then stealth is required to land an attack from the creature's side or back, followed up by dodging to avoid the Carrion's quick retaliation. The larger Carrion lack the leaping attack of their smaller brethren, instead raising themselves on their hind legs and slamming their bulk to the ground, inflicting huge damage if it succeeds in coming into contact with Travis. They are generally less dangerous than the small incarnations because they move slower, allowing more time to gun them down or just go past them, something that saves a large amount of ammunition.Gallery[]Concept[]Model.Render.Silent Hill: Origins[]Travis shoots at a Carrion in the Artaud Theater Otherworld.Travis encounters a Carrion in Silent Hill's streets.Carrion Mother prepares to crush Travis.References[]↑ Silent Hill Zero Perfect Guide, p. 31 v · e · dSilent Hill: OriginsCharactersMajor CharactersTravis Grady - Richard Grady - Helen Grady - Alessa Gillespie
