Read more Slay the Spire is a roguelike deckbuilding game where you can play a mighty warrior, a deadly assassin, a mystical monk ascetic, and…a robot? That’s right — in Slay the Spire, you can straight-up play a robot, known in-game as the Defect. The Defect has some of the more unique playstyles in the game, utilizing an interesting mechanic called Orbs for extra damage, defense, and energy. In this Slay the Spire Defect guide, we look at these unique mechanics and put together some of the strongest builds for your future runs. Let’s get into it, shall we?Guide Summary Orbs are a central mechanic in the Defect’s gameplay, providing passive effects and can be evoked for stronger effects. Focus increases Orb abilities. The Defect’s starting relic is Cracked Core, which channels a Lightning Orb at the start of each battle. It can be traded for a boss relic. The Lightning build focuses on channeling Lightning Orbs for high damage output, with key cards like Electrodynamics and Storm. Important relics include Captain’s Wheel and Emotion Chip. The Frost build focuses on defense, utilizing Frost Orbs and key cards like Blizzard and Glacier. Important relics include Data Disk and Bottled Tornado. The Reprogram build ignores Orbs and focuses on powerful attack and defense cards. Key cards include Hyperbeam and Claw. Important relics include Inserter and Nuclear Battery. Slay the Spire Defect OverviewWe’ll start our Slay the Spire Defect guide with a quick overview of the character and mechanics. This includes a breakdown of their Orbs, as well as their starting relic and cards.Starting Relic: Cracked CoreImage: Mega Crit via HGG / Joel StadlerThe Defect’s starting Image: Mega Crit via HGG I have loved video games before I even knew what they were. Read more In the roguelike deckbuilder Slay the Spire, one of the best parts of the game (or my favorite part, at least) are the relics. Relics are special items you pick up during a run that give you various passive bonuses. I’m a relic addict, but even if you aren’t as obsessed with them as I am, you’ll have to admit that they can add some serious power to your build. We’ve previously covered which relics are good for certain builds; today, we’re ranking the best Slay the Spire relics overall. Let’s get started, shall we?14 Best Slay the Spire Relics, Ranked Good to BestOne quick disclaimer — there are plenty of strong relics in the game, and the “best” choices will depend on each individual run. Some are better for certain builds and characters than others. The basic criteria for our ranking are relics that can be used by every character and are useful regardless of your specific build. We’ve covered build-specific relics in our other guides, so we’re going for more general appeal here. Without further ado, let’s jump into our ranking!Membership CardImage: Mega Crit via HGG / Joel StadlerMembership Card is a shop relic that reduces the cost of everything the merchant sells by 50% for the rest of the run. This is just straight value.Empty CageImage: Mega Crit via HGG / Joel StadlerEmpty Cage is a boss relic that lets you remove two cards from your deck. This relic is pretty low down the list compared to Smiling Mask (which we’ll cover later), but that’s only because Smiling Mask offers you more opportunities to remove cards. This is still a strong choice!Meal TicketImage: Mega Crit via HGG / Joel StadlerMeal Ticket is a common relic that heals you for 15 whenever you enter a shop. There’s not much else to say — this relic is just very strong.PantographImage: Mega Crit via HGG / Joel StadlerPantograph is an uncommon relic that heals you for 25 whenever you enter a boss fight. Healing before a boss is quite welcome in any game, but especially in Slay the Spire. Only during boss and elite fights. This obviously isn’t as good as the other two, but it’s about what you can expect from a common relic.Bloody IdolImage: Mega Crit via HGG / Joel StadlerThere is one healing relic that stands far above the others — the Bloody Idol. It’s tough to get, as you first need to get the Golden Idol event relic, then swap it out for the Bloody Idol during a different event, but these steps are all worth it. Bloody Idol heals you for 5 every time you earn gold, which is at least at the end of every combat. It can also heal you during certain event rooms. You can essentially become a discount Ironclad, or stack it with Burning/Black Blood for even better heals!Lizard TailImage: Mega Crit via HGG / Joel StadlerLizard Tail is my personal pick for the best relic in Slay the Spire. Unlike most other relics, which offer passive buffs, the Lizard’s Tail is a one-time use relic. The first time you die during your run, you instead heal to 50% health. This is huge, as Slay the Spire can be a rather brutal game. It is also worth noting that the Fairy in a Bottle potion is the only other effect in the game that can resurrect you. There are cards and relics that prevent damage or heal your character, but those are the only two effects that prevent death directly. Since I can think of no situation in the game where you would not want to have this relic, I have to make it my pick for the best Slay the Spire relic.Join the High GroundThat’s it for our ranking of the best Slay the Spire relics — thanks for reading! Of Strength at rest sites up to three times, and Lizard’s Tail of course gives us a one-time heal to 50% instead of dying. For boss relics, Nuclear Battery is the one we want. It channels us one Plasma at the start of combat, making it strictly better in our build than any of the other boss relics that give you an extra energy at some cost. There are no event relics that specifically stand out for our build, so all that remains is the Brimstone shop relic, which gives us two stacks of Strength each turn, at the cost of giving opponents one stack as well.Join the High GroundAnd there you have our Slay the Spire Defect guide — thanks for reading! Read more In the classic roguelike deckbuilder Slay the Spire, there are four different classes to choose from on your quest. The Ironclad, the Silent, the Defect, and the Watcher all have their own unique styles of play, though the Watcher’s stances can make her particularly tricky. Never fear, though — with the right understanding (and the right deck), she’s actually fairly easy to play. To help you get started, we’ve put together this guide to the Watcher in Slay the Spire, covering her mechanics and various decks and strategies you can use.Let’s get to it!Slay the Spire Watcher OverviewWe’ll start our Slay the Spire Watcher guide with a quick overview of her character and mechanics. This includes a breakdown of her stances, as well as her starting relic and cards.Starting Relic: Pure WaterImage: Mega Crit via HGG / Joel StadlerThe Watcher starts with the relic Pure Water. This relic adds a Miracle to your hand at the start of each fight. Miracle is a 0-cost card with Retain and Exhaust, and grants you one extra energy for the turn when played (two energy when upgraded). This can definitely be helpful, but Pure Water is still one of the weakest starting relics in the game.Luckily, there’s a workaround. Every time you start a new run in Slay the Spire, the whale allows you to select a bonus from a list. These options get better the further you got in your previous run. For the Watcher, your best option is to trade out your starting relic for a random boss relic. This can be a bit of a risk, but many boss relics grant you an extra energy every turn in exchange for a drawback of some sort (the inability to earn gold or see enemy intents, for example). This is usually a huge upgrade to Pure Water, so keep an eye out for this option.StancesImage: Mega Crit via HGGSlay the Spire: The Best Relics Ranked
