This document has been The default network protocol SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) has regulated the sending and forwarding of e-mails on the internet since the 1980s. However, when an e-mail is sent, it does not always go directly to the addressed recipient, which can be inconvenient at best or dangerous for security reasons at worst. Instead, sending e-mails is made possible by an external third-party server. This kind of well-configured smarthost serves as an upstream SMTP relay to handle large volumes of messages and prevent spam at the same time. Here is everything you need to know about it. What is an SMTP relay? The term “SMTP relay” (or “e-mail relay”) is defined in a completely contradictory way on the internet. Some sources speak of a process, others of a service, yet others use the term as a synonym for SMTP servers or even lump it together with the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). In a sense, everyone is right, but they all fail to bring the individual aspects together in a meaningful way.So, here is an attempt at a clear definition: SMTP relay means the process of forwarding e-mails on the internet from a sender to a recipient; this process is carried out according to the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol by so-called SMTP relay servers, which in turn can be part of an external service (an SMTP relay service). What is an SMTP relay server? An SMTP relay server (also called mail relay server or mail transfer agent) is an SMTP server, which enables an SMTP relay. This means that it accepts e-mails from a sender and forwards them to any third party. In most cases, this is an external third-party server on the internet that is connected between the sender and recipient STMP servers (and any other mail transfer agents or MTAs). When sending messages within the same mail provider domain, however, no additional server is involved, which is why, in this instance, it doesn’t count as an e-mail relay. An SMTP relay is when an SMTP relay server forwards e-mails from one sender to a recipient in another domain. 2025-03-28HelloWe configured a postoffice as smarthost for incoming mail, all fine here. But SMTP is used on our mailenable account, and we are having problems with this setting:- On SMTP security settings if we select 'Authenticated senders must use address from their postoffice', we must have the mailboxes configured on mailenable, but already tested, and incoming emails are delivered here and not at the smarthost external IP;- If we disable that option everything works ok (no need to have the mailboxes, just one to authenticate on smtp), but it is not very secure, we even noticed someone who uses gmail.com to access their account, sending emails from our server with the gmail.com sender address instead of their domain;- Isn't there an option to force 'Sender email domain must be local' instead of 'Sender email domain must be local or resolvable through DNS'... because this could solve this particular issue.Any ideas on how to improve security and keep things running with incoming smarthost?ThanksAntonio

2025-04-23To deliver emails from A to B, virtually all emails worldwide use SMTP. This Simple Mail Transfer Protocol ensures that all mail servers speak the same ‘language’ to understand each other when transferring messages. In this article, we’ll explain how this works. What is SMTP?The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is a relatively simple – hence the name – text-based protocol for sending emails. It specifies the message’s sender, followed by its recipient(s), sending details, and content. This data lets the receiving email client know who to send the message to and what to display. Although SMTP is not the only way to send emails, it is the de facto standard for email communication. One language for all email trafficThe fact that SMTP is the standard for email delivery ensures that almost all mail servers understand each other. As a result, you can assume that an email you send to a German customer will arrive in the same fashion as an email you send to someone in the UK. However, SMTP is a protocol that assumes the recipient is always online. Since most customers aren’t online 24/7, SMTP needs some assistance. POP3 and IMAP ensure the recipient can retrieve the email (Gmail, Outlook, etc.). With SMTP, you upload your email to ‘the cloud’, where POP3 or IMAP downloads that email. The technical operation of SMTPSMTP is a protocol that works according to a client-server model. The client C takes the initiative to communicate with the server S, which is always available and reactive. The client is the sending party, and the server is the receiving party—the communication between the two looks somewhat like this:Example of the SMTP client-server communicationSuppose you want to deliver an email to a client who uses Gmail. The client is going to connect to smtp.gmail.com. After establishing the connection via telnet (telnet smtp.gmail.com 587), the server (S) opens with a greeting:S 220 smtp.gmail.com ESMTPC > HELO flowmailer.netS 250 HelloNext, the client introduces itself by telling who the sender is. The server checks if the sender is OK.C > MAIL FROM: you@yourcompany.comS 250 OkNow that the server has approved the sender’s
