TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Animal Services shared their advice after a positive rabies case in a dog was confirmed in Tulsa city limits."So February 14th, a bite incident was reported by a citizen here in Tulsa," said Colton Jones, the Operations Manager for Tulsa Animal Services. "A follow up investigation by our animal control officers into that incident found that the biting animal had been euthanized by its owner and buried outside of the city limits, so we made a request that it be exhumed and brought back to us so that post-bite testing could be done for rabies. In the process of submitting that to the state lab for testing for rabies, we did receive a positive result and at this time we're currently working with the Oklahoma State Department of Health for post-exposure protocols for the people involved and then taking care of any animals that are needing to be taken care of."According to City of Tulsa veterinarian Carolynne Cash, it's quite rare to have a dog test positive for rabies in the state of Oklahoma."Bites are common, but the positive rabies in a dog or cat is not super common. Probably in the whole state—I was talking to the State Health Department yesterday—probably every year between two to five...I think the ratio is kind of like three cats to two dogs basically test positive. They're checking for vaccination status of the animal that bit and then following protocols based upon that vaccination status. So really, the biggest thing is a lot of people don't want to report bite incidents in some instances, but it is drastically important and this situation kind of underscores that importance of why following our protocols and reporting those bites is seriously important."Cash shared the typical protocol that occurs after a biting incident."Usually what happens when a dog bites a person, they're picked up by the animal control officer. They come in here for a 10-day hold and if they are not showing symptoms of rabies at the end of that 10 days, they can be released back to the owner...A lot of people think the animals automatically get put down and they do not."Cash said the best way to protect yourself and your animals is to get your animals vaccinated and properly boostered with the rabies vaccine. Beyond keeping your pet safe, there's a $75 fine associated with keeping an unvaccinated animal in Tulsa city limits."I do just want to remind everybody that the source of the rabies is, I don't think we touched upon that, is from the wildlife. So that's why it's impossible to eradicate rabies. We do have quite a bit in our bats and skunks in Oklahoma in particular. Those are the main ones that test positive consistently. So just a reminder to the suburban Tulsans as we do have those in the suburban areas, so don't think that you don't need to [vaccinate] just because your dog goes in your backyard."If you suspect your animal has been exposed to rabies, both Jones and Cash advised that you follow up with your family
