Re: Stave construction Beautiful shells SF! It must be very satisfying to build such nice wooden instruments.I'd just like to say that the use of glue in instrument building is not an inherent negative. It's about using the right glue and using it correctly.Every stringed instrument, acoustic guitars, violins, violas, cellos, double basses, et al, are all held together using tried and true glues.Yeah, even that guy Antonio Stradivari got some pretty good resonance using glue. 08-12-2016, 07:09 AM #34 User Info Menu Re: Stave construction holy beautiful snare drums batman!!I am seriously so impressed and so extremely jealous.I wish I had the knowledge/tools/and knowhow to attempt something like this. A drum souvenir because both drum keys I brought went missing soon after, searched everywhere, so I could not tweak or tune anything the whole night, but the snare seemed to come to life and seemed to sound better and better as the night went by. 08-21-2016, 10:53 AM #40 User Info Menu Re: Stave construction Hi Signia. What's your opinion on the Ryobi bench grinder? The hardware store here has them for sale. (Nothing else) LOL. Really comtemplating getting it but not sure if if I should wait and get something else when I go on my annual Florida shopping spree. ThanksPS... Absolutely stunning drums you build there of course!all the best... 08-21-2016, 11:23 AM #41 User Info Menu Re: Stave construction Ryobi stuff in general is a price over beef tool. The motor is a little weak, but for what I use this for, just sharpening lathe tools, it works OK. I have a beefier King unit that has a wire wheel and a more coarse grinding wheel. If you apply pressure on the Ryobi like you would do for wire wheel cleaning or some heavy grinding, the motor would not hold up. 08-21-2016, 11:51 AM #42 User Info Menu Re: Stave construction Originally Posted by signia fan Ryobi stuff in general is a price over beef tool. I like to have 3/8-1/2 of material to shave off on the lathe, I start with boards roughly 7/8" thick. So break out your calculator.a 14" snare is really 13 3/4" to 13 7/8" in diameter. If it was a true 14" the head would lock onto the shell.so I need 14 3/8" divided by Pi (roughly 3.142) this gives you the circumference if

Layed out flat. Divide that by the number of boards you want to use, say 16 and you will have the width. Divide the number of boards by 360 divided by 2 and that tells you what angle you need to cut the edges at, it has to be DEAD ON, no gaps. (example 9.82 degrees) you need a digital magnetic angle finder that sticks to your saw blade, table saw therefore must be set up level and true, this is a major chore but makes for precise work.I also leave an extra inch in length for wiggle room, so a 7 inch snare, I make at 8 to start. And as the collection grows, yes I will sell a few. 07-08-2011, 11:12 AM #30 User Info Menu Re: Stave construction Originally Posted by signia fan Not worth the time, I could just build another shell.
