TCI 6 Speed Automatic An interesting thing that I ran into this week. I went over to my engine builder and we got TCI on the phone to order the 6 speed transmission. so we were on the phone with TCI going down the check list of can the 6 speed automatic handle the 800 foot pounds of torque, "check". Can it handle a 1000 hp ," check". Does it has engine braking , NO !!! what--- ,NO-- he says again. Brakes squealing full stop. WTF they claim it is for pro touring and racing ???? Drag racing I guess . So who thought that was a good idea??. Anyone try the TCI 6X 6speed Was wondering if anyone had tried 6X 6speed by TCI thinking about it for my car....... would love to hear thoughts Those who do evil to others - the killers, the rapists, psychos, sadists - will come to know me well. Frank Castle is dead. Call me The Punisher I havent heard anything bad about it, but for what they are asking for one i am not suprised. I have 6X in my 64 Vette. 6X is a close ratio automatic transmission. 2nd - 5th gear is similar to manual M20 close ratio tranmission. RPM retension between shifts is unmatched by any A4 automatic. Notice the drive ratio in each gear with 3.55 rear gear and what rear gear a T56 6 sp manual car would need to match the 6X ratio wise in 4th gear as well as come close in 2nd & 3rd. T56's 1st gear is it's only gear with better mechanical advantage than 6X, but it may be a little to much advantage as RPM lost between 1st to 2nd gear is huge even with perfect shift, taking engine out of it's power band. My 64 still has a 3.54 1:1 5th gear for a little more top end. 6X has average lost of 1600 RPM between shifts. Shift at 6500 RPM and engine RPM only falls back to 4900 +/- 100 RPM. Use of Old School mechanical advatage to help make up for not having a lot of HP. 6x doesn't have engine braking. I also have the older 6X package that uses old TCI Red Box controler rather than TCI's EZ-TCU™ Transmission Control Unit currently shifted with trans. I believe the Red Box has more control over shifts than EZ does. This allows the transmission to have its own cooling system and doesn't allow the engine water temperature to heat the fluid.What is the correct size cooler for my application?ANSWER: Unlike a lot of items you buy for your vehicle, bigger is predominately better when it comes to transmission coolers. The answer would be as big as you can get or to run multiple coolers in series, again staying away from the factory radiator cooler lines. Where should I mount a transmission cooler?ANSWER: TCI® highly recommends mounting your external transmission oil cooler in front of the radiator. This allows for adequate airflow. If this is not possible then you should mount it in a location where the cooler can receive airflow. (Engine side) Then with the converter installed in transmission, take a ruler and measure the distance from the straight edge down to the mounting pad of the converter. 2025-04-25To Kevin at Baumann the Ford factory service manual says to remove and discard this filter during the tear down, but doesn't mention replacing it on re-assembly. Kevin also mentioned that this filter started appearing in 99 transmissions. Keving is going to talk it over with Karl on Monday and see what he has to say about it. This explains why it didn't appear in any of my documentation, all my crap is based on 1996. Ryan, I like the way you moded your transmission mount. It looks like you retained the stock frame mounting location, is that right? How is that shifter cable working for you? 2025-04-24Anyone try the TCI 6X 6speed Was wondering if anyone had tried 6X 6speed by TCI thinking about it for my car....... would love to hear thoughts Those who do evil to others - the killers, the rapists, psychos, sadists - will come to know me well. Frank Castle is dead. Call me The Punisher I havent heard anything bad about it, but for what they are asking for one i am not suprised. I have 6X in my 64 Vette. 6X is a close ratio automatic transmission. 2nd - 5th gear is similar to manual M20 close ratio tranmission. RPM retension between shifts is unmatched by any A4 automatic. Notice the drive ratio in each gear with 3.55 rear gear and what rear gear a T56 6 sp manual car would need to match the 6X ratio wise in 4th gear as well as come close in 2nd & 3rd. T56's 1st gear is it's only gear with better mechanical advantage than 6X, but it may be a little to much advantage as RPM lost between 1st to 2nd gear is huge even with perfect shift, taking engine out of it's power band. My 64 still has a 3.54 1:1 5th gear for a little more top end. 6X has average lost of 1600 RPM between shifts. Shift at 6500 RPM and engine RPM only falls back to 4900 +/- 100 RPM. You can hear engine rpm drop very few RPM between 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th shifts. When car shifted into 5th near top of the hill it was doing 132 MPH per tuners data logger. Use of Old School mechanical advatage to help make up for not having a lot of HP. 6x doesn't have engine braking. I also have the older 6X package that uses old TCI Red Box controler rather than TCI's EZ-TCU™ Transmission Control Unit currently shifted with trans. I believe the Red Box has more control over shifts than EZ does. Also stores two tunes selectable by use of toggel switch on dash to switch between a
