Courtesy photo (we-ha.com file photo) West Hartford’s Department of Public Works will have Saturday office hours on four Saturday’s so residents can more easily purchase their permits for the Yard Waste and Recycling Center.SubmittedThe Public Works Office will be open from 7 a.m. to noon on four Saturdays so that residents can obtain an annual yard waste and recycling permit. The dates are Sept. 7, Sept. 21, Oct. 19, and Oct. 26.Permits may be purchased online or in person. If purchased online, please bring your receipt, vehicle registration, and driver’s license. If you purchase the permit in person, please provide your credit card, vehicle registration, and driver’s license. Permits may also be picked up and purchased at the Public Works office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday through Friday. The office is closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Commercial or out-of-town vehicles are not allowed.The Yard Waste and Recycling Center allows residents to dispose of and recycle items such as textiles, books, scrap metal, paint, electronics (anything with a plug and no Freon), mattresses, mercury thermostats, brush, leaves, clean fill, concrete rubble, and household recycling: plastic bottles, containers, tubs, and single-use cups; glass, cardboard, boxboard, paper, and metal containers (cans, aluminum foil, foil containers, food grade aerosol containers).Further details

WEST HARTFORD — Spring yard waste collection will begin April 11 and span over a three-month period, allowing residents to recycle yard waste instead of disposing these items into the waste stream.The collections will take place from April 11 to 15, May 9 to 13 and June 6 to 10. Yard waste should be placed in 30-gallon paper biodegradable bags, which must be placed at the curb by 6 a.m. on a resident’s trash collection day.The Department of Public Works defines yard waste as leaves, pine needles, pine cones, acorns, twigs, dead plant matter and thatch.Residents must bundle branches under 4 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length with organic string, twine or rope and lay them next to bags. Branches exceeding these dimensions will not be collected, and bags and bundles cannot weigh more than 60 pounds.Yard waste bags contaminated with soil, rocks or grass clippings will be marked with an “X” and will no longer be eligible for curbside collection, according to the public works department.Unacceptable items include yard waste placed in plastic bags, trash cans, cardboard boxes, paper grocery bags, bundles tied with wire or in other containers. Paper leaf bags containing branches, trash, grass, soil, rocks, bulky or metal items will not be collected.The Yard Waste & Recycling Center, located at 25 Brixton St., is also open year round for unlimited residential use with an annual permit on Monday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.The annual fee-based permit may be purchased online at www.WestHartfordCT.gov/PublicWorks or in person at the Center.
